Is the Super Bowl More Popular than the Stanley Cup in Canada?
World Cup Final and possibly the 100m final could out it. Not sure on the 100m final but definitely the World Cup final. Heck, maybe even the Champions League final?
Considering it's one game a week, and essentially dominates all television as we know it, there's no surprise that the nfl gets huge ratings.
I think the better question is which would get more rating, a super bowl. Or game 7 of a Vancouver versus toronto, as the stanley cup play off if it were on a sunday.
Anyhow television ratings get far too much importance, gate revenue can be far better measure of how truly popular something is.
When the Superbowl is on TV, there is nothing else on here in Canada. The other networks that aren't showing the game just show re-runs. Plus the game is on like 3 or 4 channels simultaneously.
Wait until Toronto hits a Stanley Cup final, I got friends in other cities that say they would watch that as if it was their own team just because it'll be like watching history...the Leafs...contending for a cup? Got to see it.
In Canada if it was Leafs vs Van, Winnipeg, Calgary or Edmonton it would get close to Superbowl ratings each game.
Let's say in a few years there is a Leafs-Oiler's final. Oiler's are star studded by then and popular, Leafs are the Leafs... if a clinching game 6 or 7 was on a Saturday night the ratings would be nearly those of the Olympics and more then the Superbowl.
Another factor is WINTER vs Summer. And the SC final is in the Summer really... Not much to do on Sunday Feb 3rd!
There were 10 of us where I was watching the game. 6 of us knew the rules for football and only 3 of us could actually name multiple players on either team. Most people just "watch" because they think they are supposed to and its a good excuse to get drunk on a Sunday.
The Spain-Netherlands final had 700 mil. estimated rating worldwide. I remember being at a rock festival that summer in Finland (where football/soccer isn't even that popular compared to hockey) and there were hundreds of people watching the game from a wide screen instead of the bands they paid for. It was kinda crazy but awesome.
So a single stanley cup game shouldn't count as an example, one time happening will always draw more attention.
Probably. But 9/10 Canadians who watch the Super Bowl couldnt even tell you the names of either quarterback. They're just there for the party.
The other factor is its a set time and place. Where as the Finals is a series that could end on a Wednesday.
This. I sometimes watch it but its the only game I watch in the whole year, I can't name 5 quarterbacks. Super Bowl is just more family oriented and whatnot.

The super bowl is just another holiday to many, where one can show red eyed for work on monday, and be considered just one of the guys.
I was hoping someone might post some ratings instead of being cocky about the semi-final names.
1.985 million Canadians watched AFC conference finals
1.838 watched NFC conference finals
Those ratings saw a decrease from last year when 2.3 million Canadians watched the AFC championship game, speculation is the ratings saw a drop due to the excitement of the NHL returning.
For comparison, the most watched game last season during the NHL EC finals was game 6, with 1.8 million Canadians tuning in.

I believe the Super Bowl beats the CL final narrowly in the viewership ratings. Globally that is, not in Europe where the CL final is by far the most watched annual sporting event.
No, Asia lifted CL final rating beyond Super Bowl.

Some of the media outlets here in the US would tell us that Super Bowl Sunday is the greatest day of the year - better than Christmas, New Year's (day and evening), Thanksgiving, Fourth of July and Flag Day all put together.
I'll be damned if I'm going to waste that day watching some stupid football game.
This place near me usually has an open hockey about kick-off time - good way to escape the hyperbole.
is it really hyperbole if it is, in fact, treated like a holiday? Like, have you ever worked a retail job during the Super Bowl? You won't see a single customer.
