What's with the ice in Edmonton?

Is it normal for it to be so chewed up after one period? It looks like an outdoor rink that's never been resurfaced.

Best ice in the league by far man.

Honestly, pristine. I look forward to our games against the oilers just because of the ice.

Winnipeg can be pretty bad too. Lots of snow sometimes. Real bad bounces. Hell sometimes there's still pools of water after they put the zamboni over it.

It's been getting worse and worse every year for the last 4 at least. It still kinda has that rep for good ice, but no way is it as good as it used to be. It looks terrible this year though especially, and you can see more pucks taking bounces and guys catching edges then ever before.

It's always like that, it's literally like snow, Edmonton is probably trying to cut down on their electric bill.

Edmonton's had really poor ice for years now. And there was a concert last night, and the ice is always especially bad following concerts at Rexall.

I've heard rumours that the surface below the ice might even be uneven.

Also the lighting is really bad which makes it look awful too.

The heat from all the horse mask is hurting the quality.

Yes, but other arenas do seem to handle busy schedules better than Rexall does.

These two posts pretty much cover what I was going to say. Its funny the NHLPA voted Edmonton to have the best ice in 2011, most Edmonton posters couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. It has lived on reputation for the past 5 years.

If anything, that part of the poll completely negates the rest of it for me. It's bad ice, yet players still vote it as the best.

Muse concert last night. In the 90's and early 2000's Edmonton was still sort of a smallish prairie town so Rexall/Skyreach wasn't used for much else other than hockey. Now that its grown to a moderate sized city over the last few years, a lot of events have been taking place at Rexall such as concerts, different sports, etc. So the ice makers don't have a lot of time to make the ice perfect.

Add that to the fact that the building is really old, and the fact that we lost our ice maker to the NHL a few years ago, ice conditions have slowly been getting worse over the last 5 years or so.

They've also had complaints from teams like Dallas and Nashville over the past couple of seasons if I recall correctly. I agree that when people say Edmonton has the best ice it's completely based on reputation. The puck bounces all over.

I never get comments saying it's bad. I mean I do when it's the day after a concert but how can you tell just from looking at it on TV? Justin Schultz and Nail Yakupov were both amazed at how good the ice is in Edmonton. (from Oil Change)

Selanne is the only player I've ever heard complaining about it.

Seems like it really varies..

I remember playing a game on the ice in 05 or 06 for minor hockey week and it was just gross ice. Water, snowed up so fast, and more water.

There's a reason we're getting a new rink.

I also played on it during minor hockey and I didn't feel this way at all.

I agree with the point about the lighting. It's hard to pinpoint, but it sure seems to highlight the problem.

Edit: Fun fact: upon researching ice conditions, the humidity in Raleigh requires the PNC arena to run 12 dehumidifiers.

Played there for minor hockey week in 06, was the best ice I've ever skated on, a totally different universe than regular rec ice. The ice plant is very old though and I wouldn't be surprised if the ice conditions are deteriorating, the reason it looks so snowy is because of the lighting. The lights at Rexall are brighter than most others around the league, so more glare off the ice and more noticeable snow

You mean dark, right?

Darkest arena in the league, no question.

With the building sold out all the time it would be harder to regulate. I bet Katz doesn't mind it being criticized. Time for a new building?

I actually think the lighting is great, I love watching games in Edmonton. I think the lighting is so good that it allows you to see more detail in the ice, which is why it may look worse.

Sarcasm? I feel like it is the brightest, and the Avs announcers mentioned the other night that Duchene loves playing there because it is brighter than most arenas.
