I agree. Statistically every single facet of his game is below average. IF you allow some leeway for playing on a team with what is usually bad defense I can see how you might consider him mediocre/average tier. But I don't see how anyone can place him in the top 10 of goalies. I don't think he is that "painfully" overrated around the entire league, but among Carolina fans, yes definitely.

He's been able to build a reputation based on being hot in the playoffs in 06. People have trouble seeing past that. In addition, he makes his saves look more dramatic than they really are, so when he makes a good save it looks REALLY good, but then he gives up tons of soft ones.

That Ward, what a bum. Almost as overrated as Jordan Staal.

So the stats show he's mediocre and overrated, while at the same time showing he's overworked and underrated.

I love stats...

When he is good he is very very good and when he is bad he is horrid...

(Unfortunately he's bad more often than he is good)

If he played against the Bruins every game he'd be a vezina contender, this I am certain of

Kind of an odd time for this thread. Just made 41 saves on 42 shots to pick up a W.

For the record, that's .927 in his past 4 games.

So bad.

Anyone that calls him average is wrong
Anyone that calls him elite is wrong

Basically he's in the 6-12 range every year. He plays behind an atrocious defense, plays more games and faces more shots than any G in the league. But, he usually is money in big games and in the post season he's almost unbeatable.

Just off the top of my head I have Ward around 7th or 8th best in the league. Don't see too many people over-rating him though. He's had a bad start to the season and i've noticed because he's in my pool so i think that has more to do with this thread than his actual ability.

Not to mention, they also play in the worst division in the NHL. This year, with a much improved roster (I know it's early still), he's managed to be mediocre.

Nothing personal against the guy as I think he is a good goalie, but it seems like that Conn Smythe has bought him a whole LOT of
slack throughout his career.

Discuss, and for all the Ward super fans, please tell me why he isn't overrated.
Don't you just hate it when you put all the time and effort into a thread like this and it completely blows up in your face just a couple hours later?

Yes. As we saw in this thread tonight, stats are flawless and short-term streaks are the only things that matter.

How about 4 seasons?

From 2008-2009 to 2011-2012 Ward is 5th in games played, 3rd in saves, 8th in SV%. Yeah I'd say he's pretty good. The only goalie who has a higher SV% and more GP is Henrik Lundqvist.

I think he has the ability to turn it on and have stretches where he plays like an elite goalie, but he's not consistent about it.

Yep. Always been very solid on mostly below average teams.

The Leafs.

Seriously, it was THE Leafs. He got lots of nice bounces tonight, too.

My thoughts are based on his career so far, not one game. But enjoy, he's back in Conn Smythe form no doubt.

Right now, you are very close to insane. I guarantee he's not even close to top 5. That was a good one though. You really are a funny guy.

Didn't take long at all. As for blowing up in my face, that's the great thing about stats and facts, they completely override message board remarks that think they are witty and cool.
