This is significant cause of our inability in the last few seasons to score 5 on 5 on par with the leaders in this catagory.
In the games we play we score more 5 on 5 then the opposition. In fact were #1
This stat is very important in our case cause it signals the fact that we have turned the corner and can stay in the game and even dictate the play 5 on 5. Even though it is early in the season it is significant.
The absurdly high ratio is due to Price being just about invincible 5 on 5 this year, he won't keep that up.
But the team has been very strong at controling the puck and preventing chances against when the game is close. In particular Plekanec and Markov's units that have been playing the shutdown roles.
Offensively, Plekanec and Desharnais's lines have been a bit snakebit while Galchenyuk and Gallagher are on a hot streak to start their careers. The scoring should even out going forward into a decently deep group. Expect Pacioretty to start scoring in bunches soon.
This is a lot like the situation 5 on 5 they were in to start last season but without the bad luck and hugely improved depth on defense. I knew they had the talent to do this but was questioning the coaching since Therrien's track record for 5 on 5 play was dubious. I've been pleasantly wrong on that so far.
