Hopefully Sather has finally come to conclusion that the enforcer role (if you even need one anymore in today's NHL) is better filled by a young, hungry AHL type (mashinter, Bickel) than a 30+ guy with a history of doing it.

Sather is now 0-3 in these type of signings (brashear, Boogard-RIP, and Rupp).

Rupp was a useful player in his day so I agree with those who wonder if he even fit the bill of an enforcer).

Anyway, looking for some help on mashinter. Just glancing at his stats he does not seem to be a guy who dropped the gloves very often. Only 100+ PIM once in his entire career including junior.
Are we assuming that he can drop them based on him being 6'4" or is he a legit heavyweight?

Powe was expendable to them.
This is pretty much sums it up.

I've been a huge Powe fan since his Philly days, and I think you guys will be happy with him if your expectations are manageable. He is never going to be a big scorer, at best he is a 15 points a season guy.

He will improve your penalty kill, and help with shorthanded chances. He was rumored to be one of the fastest skaters, if not the fastest skater, on the Flyers in 2009-2010. Don't put too much stock into his +/- last year, he was racking up tons of PK minutes on a pretty bad team.

Also, he can fight but he's not going to be a primary enforcer. That's why you have Asham. The most shocking stat I've seen regarding this trade is that so far Powe only has 1 hit this season, expect that number to jump up dramatically.

John Scott also fits this profile even if strictly speaking he was still 29 at the time of the trade.

lets hope Sather stops the goon signings. Bickel is basically another sigiing in that mold and look how great he's doing. Atleast he's cheap and can play multiple postions so he's not completely useless on the team given the right situations.

McIlrath will be the new tough guy soon enough just give him time to develop

If you check out his fight card he has some legit heavies on there including Parros and Reaves.

He won't be a super heavy ever, in SJ, there hopes were that he would become another Ryan Clowe type before last season where is development stunted for some reason. I think he can be a Rupp-like player. 10g, 10-15a, 100PIM's

From the videos I've seen of Mashinter, I wouldn't call him a legit heavy... His balance just isn't good enough to handle the real big guys.

Bickel is a better fighter.

Eh masher is a capable fighter. Not a top fighter but could probably hold his own against mostly anyone. I wouldn't think him fighting a guy like Shawn Thornton would be an automatic loss. While Rupp fighting pretty much anyone was

Being the enforcer for the Rangers is like being the drummer for Spinal Tap.

Mashinter is not a guy you have around to "scare" the other team like Boogaard or Scott, but he's a guy who can answer the bell and IMO he's a level above Rupp as a fighter, on a par with Scott Thornton. Fought Parros pretty even and beat on Ryan Reaves. That's what the Rangers need. Having a "deterrent" that can't take a regular shift is not much of a detterent. I think the NYR are better off with a team toughness concept, and by that I mean throwing and accepting hits and standing up when needed.

Exactly. I'd rather beat up the other team during the game than take instigator penalties that leave us short-handed.

#NYR Tortorella called Rupp a "great teammate" but said he struggled to find him ice time, worried about speed of the game

"Speed of the game". Rupp had a hard time keeping up. He didn't do much in the summer hoping the knee would heal. Four month lockout. It didn't really help him.

We have Asham also who seems to actually be able to keep up and play decent. I know he's not a heavyweight but he can throw em and i'm pretty sure he's a little psychotic and doesn't fear anyone.

I would like to see asham get a little more ice time. Not having Rupp on his line may help with that. Whoever is out there with him should provide significantly more speed

Strange. You would think the 4 mouth lockout would have benefitted him. A full summer (and more) to heal and time to build it back up.

Leave it to Sather to trade a former #9 overall for a bunch of scraps and late round picks.

aaaaaaaanyway, i think this is a steal of a trade. awesome stuff. we now have added depth to the bottom six. i'm seeing that he's a great PKer and energy guy and awesome! i remember him from his Philly days and i didn't like him very much (mostly cuz he was a ********) but we could definitely use a guy like that on the roster. especially one that can skate.

again, stolen trade. how does Sather do it?
My thoughts exactly..are the wild getting a conditional pick/futures or something? Doesn't make sense for them..rupp Will be retired sooner rather than later.

I was not an advocate of the Kolarik deal but I love the other (2). Hopefully Sather can continue doing this.
