Russian Olympic Rosters on Paper (1998-2010)

What is the best Roster on paper, place each year in order from best to worst. I have included the lines used at these events (Confident on the 1998 and 2002 lines but not 100% sure on the 2006 and 2010 lines).

How do you think the projected 2014 team stacks up against the previous four rosters.

Doing this made me hate Larionov oh so much more

Quote:
1998 Runners Up
P. Bure 10 - Kamensky 13 - Zhamnov 33
Yashin 19 - Kovalenko 51 - Fedorov 91
Nemchinov 8 - Krivokrasov 9 - V. Bure 20
Titov 14 - Morozov 24 - Zelepukin 25

Gusarov 5 - D. Mironov 15
B. Mironov 2 - Kasparaitis 11
Kravchuk 29 - Gonchar 55
Yushkevich 3 - Zhitnik 44

Shtakenkov 35
Trefilov 34

Nikolai Khabibulin, Alexander Mogilny, Igor Larionov, Slava Fetisov, Slava Kozlov, Oleg Tverdovsky, Vladimir Malakhov and Sergei Zubov refused to participate.
Quote:
`They're millionaires now, and they think they're big stars,'' said Bure, who will represent his country. ``How are they going to listen to a coach who makes $10,000 or $20,000? I don't think they're acting like professionals. It's not fair to the coaches.'' The Russian 1996 World Cup team was a fairly disorganized bunch with lots of lineup changes between games. It was said that the coach (Boris Mikhailov) was a mere puppet, with a "mafia" led by Fetisov and Larionov pretty much making all the decisions.
Quote:
2002 - Semi Finalists only one non NHL player
V. Bure 20 - Zhamnov 13 - P. Bure 10
Nikolishin 33 - Yashin 79 - Kovalev 27
Kovalchuk 71 - Fedorov 91 - Samsonov 14
Datsyuk 26 - Larionov 8 - Afinogenov 61
Kvasha 12

Malakhov 23 - B. Mironov 2
Kasparaitis 11 - Gonchar 55
Tverdovsky 7 - Markov 5
Kravchuk 29

Khabibulin 35
Podomatsky 31
Bryzgalov 30

Alexander Mogilny, Alex Zhitnik and Sergei Zubov all refused to participate.
Quote:
2006 Olympics Semi Finalists
Kovalev - Datsyuk - Kovalchuk
Sushinsky - Yashin - Kharitonov
Frolov - Kozlov - Korolyuk
Afinogenov - Malkin - Ovechkin

Defensemen :

Kasparaitis - Tyutin
Gonchar - Volchenkov
A. Markov - D. Markov
Zhukov - Vishnevsky

Sergei Fedorov, Alexander Mogilny and Sergei Zubov turned down offers to play for the national team. Interestingly the 2004 World Cup of Hockey (meaningless exhibition tournament) had Khabibulin, Sergei Fedorov, Alexei Zhamnov and Danny Markov, Zubov refuse to participate because Larionov was blocked in his attempt to run the Russian entry for the 2004 World Cup.
2010 Olympics Quarter Finalists
Quote:
Ovechkin - Datsyuk - Semin
Kovalchuk - Malkin - Afinogenov
Zaripov - Zinoviev - Morozov
Radulov - Fedorov - Kozlov

Grebeshkov - Korneev.
Gonchar - Tyutin.
Markov - Nikulin.
Kalinin - Volchenkov.

Nabokov
Bryzgalov
Varlamov

What do you mean the 2004 World Cup was a meaningless exhibition? That it was played before the season started? I think there were some very good hockey played there, as in 1996. By that metric the Canada Cups also becomes meaningless exhibitions. Blasphemy.

I think Malkin played with Kharitonov and Sushinsky in 2006.

Whether or not you are a fan of the World Cup, any tournament with that much talent is hardly meaningless. Besides the Russian line up for the '04 WCup is comparable to those for the Olympics mentioned above.

Alexander Frolov
Alexander Ovechkin
Alexei Kovalev
Alexei Yashin
Andrei Kovalenko
Artem Chubarov
Dainius Zubrus
Dmitry Afanasenkov
Ilya Kovalchuk
Maxim Afinogenov
Oleg Kvasha
Pavel Datsyuk
Sergei Samsonov
Viktor Kozlov
Alexander Khavanov
Andrei Markov
Anton Volchenkov
Darius Kasparaitis
Dmitri Kalinin
Oleg Tverdovsky
Sergei Gonchar
Vitaly Vishnevski

It was a good tourney, but when Russia's top 2 centers and top goalie from 2003/2004 turned down the invitation to play, the whole thing lost a bit of importance, especially in the fans' eyes.
