Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan's next contracts

Forgive me if this has been brought up before, but I'm genuinely curious as to what these guys next contracts could be? Is Glen Sather going to "bridge contract" them? I'm a little bit curious, because depending on what these guys make on their next contracts, one of Brad Richards or Marian Gaborik will have to be cut or traded (likely amnestied) if their contracts are large enough.

Stepan will get that 'bridge'. Thinking Del Zotto type of money, 2.3-2.8M, unless we eat up a few years of UFA~

McDonagh will most likely be retained long-term, in the neighborhood of 4++ Million.

Looks like Gaborik will be the odd man out if Sather can't find a way to wiggle everyone in.

Stepan at 3M for 4 years, McDonagh at 3.5M for 2.

Sather will do everything in his power to lockup McD longer term. He will not get two years unless they are way off on money. Two year contracts for Stepan and Hagelin.

This scenario has been gone over adnausium on the Rangers board. Check out the stickied salary cap thread.

This.

Gaborik will be easy to trade if/when it comes to that. Who wouldn't want Gaborik on a one year deal? He has a NTC, but I'm not privy to the details of it.

That's why this season is so important. Probably the one year we'll have Nash, Richie, Gabby, and Hank on the books.

Sather is notorious for playing hardball with these types of deals, but I think he'll open the books for McDonagh.

I'm not so sure about the "being easy to trade" part. Why give up assets? If they need to get rid of him and are demanding something significant, why bother giving it up when you can force them to buy him out with walk away power. No one's obligated to trade with Sather, and chances are GMs are probably not interested in getting swindled... Just food for thought. There will always be that crazy GM who screws everything up, though...

What?

Gaborik's a 40G scorer. If Nashville was willing to move a 1st for a 4th liner, you don't think there's a market for someone like Gaborik?

If Sather can trade Rupp for some value, I'm pretty sure there will be numerous buyes for Gaborik.

Just some food for thought.

If you could get Marian Gaborik for free, wouldn't you take that route until you know you couldn't?

Are you serious? Cmon, you're better than that. . . .

If you're a contender and needed additional goal-scoring..
If you're on the cusp of being a contender and need goal-scoring...
If you're #1 scorer was injured and needed additional scoring...

Teams are willing to pay a premium to improve their line-up. They always have been, and they always will.

Gaborik's one of the best scorers in the league. If Sather was shopping him, there would be numerous buyers lining up. This isn't even debatable.

Again, if Gaustad, who's nothing more than a 4th line Center, can fetch a 1st round draft pick, why wouldn't there be a market for Gaborik? Why didn't Nashville just, wait?

Additionally, only 1 team in the league is going to sign Marian when he hits free agency again. Who's to say that Team A or Team B signs him?

Why was there a market for Hossa and Kovalchuk? Why didn't teams just wait? . . .

Like I said, you're better than that. C'mon....

Regarding cap hits to our coming FAs - I did a small "study" here below to study how Sather has dealt with our Homegrown talent. Seems pretty clear, if you play well you triple your money on your second deal (most likely a 2 year deal) to do your "RFA #1contract diligence" and then you get paid with a longer contract.Only real exception here is Marc Staal that went straight to a bigger deal taking one year of UFA. Methinx (barring unforeseen huge development somewhere) that Hagelin, Stepan and Kreider will follow the usual formula but Ryan McD will follow the Marc Staal and get paid/locked up right away in contract 2.

Kreider is not a RFA next yr its the yr after. Depends how he plays , as of now no way 2.4 as he hasnt done anything in his 5 or so games

the others seem about right which is why its nice to save 500 K moving Rupp and getting Powe instead

It says 2014 there though. Not 2013. Agree with your assessment on kreiders results so far, but there are almost 2 full seasons until he is to be resigned.

It's crazy to think that Gaborik would be bought out over being traded.

Well there is no way for a team to know for sure they can sign Gaborik until after he hits free agency and is free to sign with any team. There have been a lot of players approaching free agencies that brought a big return because it gave teams the chance to resign the player before free agency.

Acquiring a player before UFA greatly increases the chances of keeping the player if you can fork out the cash.

Wouldn't shock be to see McD under 4M though. Wouldn't shock me to see Boyle moved as well, especially if JT's ready. Hagelin will get less than 2M imo.

You could very well be right on all 3 of your insightful assessments. But we still need to trade Gaborik for cap space - right?

OK?
I think Step is spot on.
McD: sounds good, I think maybe 4.4/4.5
Hags: I think in the 2 years 2.2M range.
Kreider: will depend how he can adapt to the NHL, or more of a question of when. so I think 2 years, 2M
