Not sure if anyone saw UFC tonight but Overeem had been taunting and disrespecting Bigfoot the entire fight.

Needless to say, many people were elated to see this happen in the 3rd round.

Thanks to Nintendo of Canada not supplying a hard street date for Fire Emblem: Awakening, I got my copy from EB Games 1 week early. Loving it so far.

I think the #1 problem in hockey around Canada is the expense. It is why Canada won't remain a top competitor internationally as there is a huge segment of the population that simply cannot afford to have their kids play at a higher level. I actually believe we have started seeing it. It has become a 'rich man's sport' and as a result we are not seeing the best athletes, but the best of the tiny portion of the population that can afford it.

A good comment something I have thought as well.

I was in a middle class family and it was tough to afford hockey. Made even worse because I went from a goalie for 2 years to defence. My dad was pissed.

They're just not minting them anymore. I think most stores will still use them until they phase out on their own.

I don't if this bodes well for hockey in Canada, I would bet the percentage of Canadians now playing in the NHL is at an all time low, look at the rosters on the majority of NHL teams and see how many defence-man are Canadian. I really don't think Canada's best athletes are even playing hockey any more.

The Wire

Thanks to a few of the faithful on here I downloaded season 1 of the Wire and started watching it on my trip to the Dominican. How did this show slip past me??? Absolutely epic writing, acting, production, and "realism". I just love it when shows are done in Baltimore (Homeside life on the streets as well). a guy noticed me watching it on the plane on my iPad and raved about it and told me it just keeps getting better over the years which is hard to believe.

definately my new (old) favorite show.

It's the same across many sports, not just hockey. Anything with travel (like a provincial team) ends up being expensive. My daughter doesn't play hockey but volleyball/basketball both have similar spring situations and then there's provincial team in the summer months as well. Depending on the age group that ends up being 2-8 trips from March to end of July. If you're on the high end with eight trips usually four of them require flights, all require hotels and food.

Realistically disadvantaged (which unfortunately you can take almost as lower middle class and down these days) kids are pretty much hosed for high level stuff, hockey is worst simply because of the added equipment costs. I can't speak to hockey as well as others but volleyball to the provincial level for a 16 year old is probably around $6000 a year including the club season and provincials. Jeez, even taekwondo for a year can run $1500 depending on the Dojung and then add travel for out of town tournaments, though most of those are North Dakota/Minnesota/Manitoba.

That's without even touching the burnout factor of year round sports.

Hockey is a rich man sport thats for sure. Can you imagine how popular hockey would be in the US if everyone could afford it?

They are pretty sweet but they only plan on supporting them for this year and next.

I was thinking about that a couple of days ago. Every other major NA sport requires a fraction of the monetary investment. The only one that would rival hockey is football, but even then football is easier to get into than hockey. A football itself is cheaper than a pair of skates and a stick, and can be shared by a whole team of people. There's a reason why soccer is classed as the world's sport - all it requires is two feet and a round ball.

not to create a pilling on penalty to hockey but I was talking to a guy from Toronto and in the GTA the operating budgets for the AAA teams for 11 and 12 year olds is north of $120,000 a year. Full time coach's.............I'll say it again full time coach's for fricken 11 and 12 year old hockey teams. Tons of politics in play on this to as some teams are privately funded: translation rich dad strokes a check for $70 or $80 K so his kid can make the team.

Messier was talking about this on H & L last year and described this out of control trend and used the term "the professionalization of kids sports". At the end of the day it is what it is but he believes kids are better off “in theory” playing multi sports although that may no longer be practical

my boy just started skating lessons this January and I love the innocence of watching a little boy learn such a great game for the 1st time. Hopefully he enjoys the sport and one day can play rec hockey with his buddies
