Richards was easily one of the worst Kings coming out of the gate. He looked slow, tentative, and was having problems connecting passes. He is coming around though, and has been much better the last couple games.

That could just as simply mean there are less goal-scorers in the West.

If it was harder to score in the West, you'd see obvious drops in production when players switch from East to West and obvious increases when they go the other direction. For every James Neal there's a Joe Thornton. Whether you're looking at Kassian, Boyle, Zach Parise, there's no such established pattern. In fact, Brad Richards, who's one of the few players to go back and forth, manifests a huge drop in production whenever he's in the East.

I'm not saying they didn't deserve to be there, but every piece of information outside of those 20 games they played in the spring, show they have been a borderline playoff type team. They have the skill and personnel to be the champions, they just haven't shown it other than the only time it was absolutely necessary. I've never seen a team like it. I'm not trying to take shots, it's just a very strange thing.
And for everyone saying it was Quick that got them there, it could have been any other playoff goalie in nets for them and they would have won the cup. They were so so dominant.

The Kings were unstoppable starting at the trade deadline. They didn't just enter "playoff mode" out of nowhere.

He was amazing for two years in Philly. I thought he was a fringe top 5 player at the time. Don't know what happened.

Is Richards really the 40-50 point player he's shown so far the last 2 years? Or will he return to the 60-70 point player he was in Philly?

I don't see enough Kings games to comment, I just know he is killing my hockey pool.
Playoffs and must win games. Take away all the clocks and calendars. Tell Mike it's a must win and you see a different animal. He looses focus over many games.

When the chips are down...

Playoffs - 83 GP 20 G 45 A 65 P
2012 Cup Run - 20 GP 4 G 11 A 15 P
Olympics - 16 GP 5 G 5 A 10 P

Not to mention those 'intangibles'

Oh for the hell of it...

Memorial Cup Championship - 2003
Calder Cup championship - 2004–05
World Junior Gold - 2005
Winter Olympic Gold Medal - 2010
Stanley Cup championship - 2011–12

The guy is a champion at every level and 28 teams would love to have him as a center.

well they did enter "playoff mode" out of no where, but it was at the deadline, because they needed to just to make 8th spot. I know this is sounding more bitter and degrading to the quality of the Kings team than I'm meaning it to, but they have only played good hockey when they absolutely needed to (post deadline to make the playoffs and subsequent cup run). It's just odd.

Lots of players are up to rough starts.. just like some players are up to super hot starts... it'll even out eventually.

Actually, He's good, but I'd trade him for a pure goal scorer cause the kings dont have that. We have a lot of two-way centers and no pure goal scorers.

That's been the strangest thing, IMO. Carter busting his ass all the time and Richards obviously playing his way back into shape. In the first few games you could tell Richards was simply badly out of shape, I swear he was taking half-shifts all the time in the 3rd; he'd go off and Clifford and Carter were out there for another 20-30 seconds.

Different players reach their "primes" at different ages. In my opinion, Richards' prime was from 2007-2011. He's been declining for a while, and if he continues this trend, he'll no longer be a 2C in a couple years

His off-ice routines are such that he may take awhile longer to get going than most players.

I think he'll pick it up. But he is never going to be a ppg guy. 60 in an 82 game season is a reasonable number for him, though. Once again, HF boards, points are not everything.

I don't care what his stats are, I'd take him on my team any day.

So the Conn Smythe winner was totally replaceable? I'm cling shennanigans on that.

In Philly he was a player who could create goals by himself, even when Stevens was the coach. That's something I just haven't seen from him in the games I watched this year, and it seems it was likely the same last year judging by his 44 points.

I know how great he is defensively, I still think the Kings won that trade.
For Philly, Simmonds replaced the points Richards had, they still have B. Schenn for futures growth, and the 2nd rounder was traded for Grossmann. That trade has been good for Philly as well when you break it down. And it will only get better as Schenn gets better. I think it is one of those "good trade for both teams" deal.
