I think a playmaker (aka Crosby and Malkin) can get better points than a sniper when he is forced to play with average/ 2nd or 3rd line linemates, but if you have a great line I would always prefer the sniper. A player is never able to get on the scorsheet on a real high pace without good teammates.

I think Stamkos wouldn't be that good in Penguinscity and Crosb would be as good in Tampa. Crosby wouldn't have that much chances to get points because he would either play with Marty or Vinny ( who is finally allowed to play full offensivly again, Boucher asked him to play defensive the last to years) and Purcell.
And Stamkos wouldn't get the passes he gets in Tampa from everywhere.

As a Bolts fan I would NEVER swap Crosby or Malkin for Stammer, because we have enough offensive talent even when Marty retires ( but right now it seems like this will never happen ), so Stammer will alwys get the chances he needs.

And Stammer has missed 3 games (all in his rookie year) in 4 seasons, Crosby has never played all 82 games of a season and Malkin did just twice.

For me Stamkos is the number one, but that should everybody decide on their own.

Does it matter that he rarely plays with Vinny and/or Conacher?

And check the posted infographic earlier in the thread - Marty didn't have that many assists on Stamkos' goals last season.

People underrate Stamkos because they assume he floats and can only hammer goals from the left circle. He's as dynamic of a goal scorer as anyone, and plays in all areas fine. He's replaced Ovechkin as the NHL's resident sniper.

I normally dislike calling players under/overrated but I really believe he's underrated when being compared to the other top players.

For my money, I think Stamkos is the best offensive player in the NHL. No one can score a goal as easy as this guy can. It's scary how easy he makes it look sometimes.

He has a lot to prove once he gets his team into the post season, however. Last time, sure he was young, but he was a passenger to St. Louis, Roloson and Lecavalier. This is his team now, when he gets into the post season, he has to show he is the best offensive player in the world.

I don't think his legacy is going to rest on that, but he does have to bring it, I agree. Last time he did have a cracked sternum or something like that, and he still put up decent (not top player level, though) numbers. But yeah, our success is going to largely depend on his performance.

Stamkos' last foray into the post season began with a bone crushing hit from Brooks Orpik. Literally, it cracked his sternum in the first game of the playoffs.

He played fine given his age and inexperience + injury.

Stamkos plays in the south east.

Someone didn't read the infographic from last season did they? 24goals vs. Atlantic and Northeast opponents, 20goals vs. Southeast.

A timeframe that lines up well to Sochi

The craziest thing about him, he's one of the most likeable players unlike the others who are so polarizing. Maybe the market has something to do with it but putting him with St. Louis is the perfect mentor.
That's just a matter of time... the haters will come eventually.

Compare that to 11 primary assists by Teddy Purcell and 6 secondary assists. So considering St. Louis only had 2 more assists on Stamkos' goals than Purcell, could we reasonably call Stamkos a product of Teddy Purcell?

Stamkos also scored 73% of his goals 5 on 5, so he's not exclusively a power play one timer.

Stamkos' recipe for success could just be that all you have to do is throw the puck on net and he'll clean it up, or else when he's lined up at the top of the circle you try to set him up.
I look at it more like Marty is a gifted player, who teams have to respect. That gives Stammer time to do what he does. Im not knocking the guy, Im just saying Marty is no Dupuis. Again on the PP with Vinny playing better, teams cant just cheat to Stamkos, they have to respect Vinny's shot.

Not what I said, and you know it.

Agreed. MSL obviously adds to Stamkos' production. Is it fair to hold that against Stamkos though? I don't think so.

Anyways until Stamkos becomes a more complete offensive player, he ranks behind Crosby and Malkin (not that that's an insult or anything). He's just a different type of offensive player, and finishes the plays-rather than dictate what happens during them like the other 2 do.
