"Elite" Players

Some of you probably watch the sports shows shown on espn and tsn2(usually) in canada during the day. A lot of the talk lately has been on whether or not Joe Flacco is "elite". Jalen Rose from Numbers Never Lie made a statement that only 20% of players in the league can be elite at one position. He then named six names and said Flacco wasn't apart of them so he isn't "elite". But looking at some numbers(playoff wins, interceptions, passing yards) Flacco could very well be considered "elite".
I guess what I'm saying is how do you define elite in hockey terms(in football its all about championships?) and going by the 20% "rule" who would be the elite players at each position?

I believe there has been this thread before, but I didnt really read it back then and would like some opinions.

C - Crosby Malkin Stamkos Datsyuk Giroux Toews(?)(intangibles)
LW - Kovy Marleau Vanek(?)(homer vote, certainly right now) Neal Benn(is he LW) OV(still gotta be elite doesn't he)
RW - Perry St.Louis Kane Hossa Gaborik(?) Eberle(?)
D - Karlsson Pietro Doughty Chara Weber Letang(?)
G - Lundqvist Price Quick Rinne Brodeur(?) MAF(?)

You'd have to have 12 defenseman if you split forwards into 3 groups.

To be elite, in my opinion, you need to have done something significant for a pretty decent amount of time (few years), and be consistent and reliable to perform at that level in the forseeable future.

My elite is more like 5%.

I think top 5 in a position should grant you elite status.

In before "Giroux is not elite" because last season is written off due to an average 9 game span.

(C) Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Datsyuk, Sedin
(LW) Ovechkin, Parise, Kovalchuk, Sedin
(RW) Kane, Perry, St. Louis, Hossa
(D) Karlsson, Pietrangelo, Weber, Chara, Byfuglien, Boyle
(G) Lundqvist, Rinne, Quick

For people like Vanek, Giroux, Price etc. just need to prove it for more than one year.

If you're going top 5 at each position, Henrik Sedin is probably not among the 5 best centres. Stamkos, Crosby, Malkin, Datsyuk, Toews and Giroux are higher. However, Daniel Sedin is probably the best LW in the game, so he clearly meets this definition of elite. Yet Henrik is at least as good as and arguably better than Daniel. So how can Daniel be elite and Henrik not? MIND BLOWN

Also even implying Fleury is elite is LOLtastic. Fleury is a mediocre goalie in this league as admirably illustrated by Derek Zona. http://www.coppernblue.com/2012/4/25...AAAAAAAJQIAwA=

For people like Vanek, Giroux, Price etc. just need to pro
55 points in 50 playoff games is totally not elite. Nor is 1.1 PPG over the last 180 games including the playoffs.

Also:
Need more than one good season to be elite-proceeds to put Erik karlsson in list of elite players.

C - Malkin, Stamkos, Crosby
LW - Kovalchuk
RW - St. Louis, Hossa
D - Karlsson, Weber, Chara
G - Price, Lundqvist, Quick, Rinne

Sustained excellence (Kovy, St. Louis, Hossa, Hank, Rinne, Price) or true dominance (Quick, Malkin, Stammer, Crosby, Karlsson, Weber, Chara).

These lists shouldn't be very long IMO.
