I understand that point completely. However, look who the Kings had on defense last year. They had two very young, and inexperienced puck movers back there (Martinez and Voynov), and they paired them with veterans - which worked to perfection. They had:
Doughty-Scuderi
Mitchell-Voynov
Martinez-Greene
I'm not saying we should have both Vatanen and Lindholm in the lineup come playoff time, but I think something like this is very reasonable:
Fowler-Lydman
Souray-Beauchamin
Sbisa-Lindholm
That's a mobile defense, and everyone in that lineup at worst can be average in their own zone.
we dont know how lindholm will be yet. for all we know he could be a terrible disappoint in his first year in the NHL.. lets give him a couple games before we all deem him to be fit for the NHL
Indeed. I thought Lindholm was super impressive in the AHL, but that doesn't automatically mean he'd be able to step seamlessly into the NHL. He's a seriously high end prospect, in my opinion, but he needs to earn a spot the same as anyone else. I'd love to see him get a look, but I think it would be a mistake to pencil him in before we see how he does.
I had this discussion about Lindholm and salary. Once Lindholm played 10 games in the AHL, then his ELC was fully initiated. So he's paid for the whole season. His option to be released to play in WJC doesn't stop his payment. I guess the only possibility there would be no payment would be due to him not returning and the Ducks' organization putting in a formal complaint. But with concussion, the medical staff with Anaheim would probably be of higher quality than down at Norfolk. Not only that, but there are more specialists in the OC and LA for concussions. So it was a great turn of fortunes that Lindholm is part of the parent team. I mean, he could have stayed with the Ducks anyhow by putting him on IR a la Vatanen.

The issue seems to be which team he belongs to. Capgeek says he's a non roster player in ANA. He is not on the 23 man roster and therefore doesn't count against the cap. Yet it is reported that he isn't on the AHL roster either. So the question still exists, how can he be on nobody's roster? Since we know he is not counting against the NHL roster the question becomes, could he be violating any league rules by continuing to stay, practice, and travel with the big club although not counting against the roster or cap limits.

I suspect that since he was hurt while assigned to the Swedish Junior Team that he is not counted against either the NHL or AHL roster until he is medically cleared to return to play.

It could be that, but I don't know for myself. All I know is he wasn't re-instated by Norfolk nor the parent team. But it's all about the medical. The NHL has nothing to do with this unless Lindholm and his agent put in a complaint against the Ducks' org. Considering he's being paid and he's getting the best medical attention with the parent club, then I doubt the NHLPA would step in.

So you're going to sacrifice quality depth in an odd, shortened season with two rookies, one being undersized (lends to overpowering him due to lack of experience) and the other having two concussion symptoms in half a season. Oh by the way, we don't know how long Fowler will be out still. If it is a concussion, then look at Lindholm' situation.
Has anyone suggested that Lindholm get a permanent spot? I think we're discussing an experiment. Lindholm would still be at risk to get concussed in the AHL. Usually after two, speedy players tens to try to be a little more elusive. I say experiment with him there. If he's solid give him a longer look and go from there.

I dont know, I didnt really follow hockey well enough to follow other teams draft picks back then haha, I just meant you had a 2nd overall pick so you cant really mess up too bad lol

Don't forget High School player Jake Gardiner with the 17th pick as well. Coaching staff seems to love Rakell as well he just doesn't have that aura around him like the others. Same can be said for William Karlsson. Early results from this draft seem to be good as well (Lindholm - a suspected reach by many / Kerdiles) but lets reserve judgement for a few years.
That last half decade + has seem to be very fruitful for Ducks scouts. Keeping fingers crossed that it continues for a very long time.
@icemancometh: Boudreau today on Lindholm: "He's not ready yet but he's getting better." No timetable. He's had two concussions. Team is being cautious.

As pointed out before, Ryan wasn't such a sought after prospect at the time at all. He was projected Top 10, but certainly not Top 3. Burke tried heavily to trade down because he was so sure he could pick him up a little later. Didn't work out and so we drafted him #2.
