are you implying he's still having post concussive issues? I think Boyle had concussion issues before he started playing hockey

Boyle doesn't get, that he needs to use his body to play effectively in Torts system period. His strength and athleticism are great, and he can only be effective when he uses them .

if the guy is not going to play with an edge, he's practically useless. He's not that great at faceoffs.

That contract WILL damage this team if they don't use the last compliance buy out on it.
This is a sad truth . guy is a solid player but in a cap world not worth how hit and for that long . He looks to have even deader legs than last year and the NYR system sucks for him . He'd be perfect on Det , or San Jose or even back with Tampa . Having Brad dump and chase wastes his best talents , passing and puck possession .

Richards is quality. He will be $$$ in the playoffs. He's going to be worth every penny of his contract. This is just a bump in the road.

I am undecided on Richards, if anything they should hold onto him for next year and the year after and then decide on the buyout. I just believe in maximizing assets. Always have, always will. If a player is not in the long-term plans, trade him and maximize your assets.

The Rangers have until June 30,2014 to make a decision on Richards.

Yeah, i meant until Neil nailed him. You are right there... But the way he played those first games makes it all the more frustrating to see him now.

I keep seeing people stating that we should wait a couple years to use the buyout on Richards. Am I wrong in believing that the NHL only allows the amnesty buyout by this upcoming summer?

Might be a good idea to do it regardless. That contract will become an anchor eventually.

Gabby for Phaneuf and Steckel. Phaneuf...nasty guy and great PP skills . Steckel is a great FO guy at approximately 1 million . Move Gabby and his Houdini act...magic one night and vanish for 4 nights . We buy out Richards when it is possible in the first off season we can . I would also love to have Kessel on our team but can't see the money working...but he is a pure goal scorer and cheaper than Gabby by 2 Million a year . It means nothing he has not scored this season...he will !!!

Now I know that is a huge upheaval...but other teams have done as much like the Kings last season . I'm just thinking out loud and it is a trade thread...and it should still be fun to speculate and throw stuff out to others and hear their ideas as well . Will it ever happen...who knows ???

The hardest part moving forward is finding the money to sign guys for next season that have to be . I'm glad I am not a GM . Armchair GM is easy...a wee bit harder for the real GM .

We've used one on Redden. The other is valid until the start of free agency in 2014.

Richards is going to lead the team in scoring this regular season. The fuss is just that. We're very lucky to have him.

Okay, good. So it gives us another season to observe Richards and decide whether he is on a downward trend or not. That contract is going to be putrid come 3-4 years.

Here's an idea over the summer:

To Detroit:
Gaborik

To NYR:
Sheahan/Tatar/Jurco/Nyquist/Jarnkrok (package of those players)

Not enough of an NHL resume. If we're trading Gaborik, we need a top-six player in return, IMO. Nyquist is a maybe, but again, he's not proven.

I agree, just trying to think of teams who may be interested. Detroit must have seen the All-Star game with Datsyuk + Gaborik. They may want to make a run soon before Datsyuk and Zetterberg get too much older.

The longer you hold, the harder it is to unload and the less in return, forcing us to the buyout, which is best as insurance in case of unusual development.

What about Paul Postma?

What in his play makes you think it's a fuss?

Hhe has been playing with Nash and Gaborik all season.

And last night all he did was hand the puck to a wide open and streaking Kreider who burned Brodeur for the 4th time in 7 games.

The effort isn't there, he's slow, his decision making is awful. How many turnovers thus far? Bad penalties. He's been flat out pathetic. He is getting points because of who he is playing with.

When he decides to show up, for more then one game, then we can say it's a fuss.

Right now, with a 32 year old, signed for 7 more years at 6.666 per, its a MAJOR concern.

Once, Zherdev led the team in scoring. Once, Lindros led the team in scoring.

No thanks.

The last thing this club needs is another old, slow, mercenary.

In my opinion Phaneuf is hideously overpaid and Steckel is another defensive forward in the mold of guys we already have.

Gabby's "houdini act" is the style that he's always played and he's been wildly successful over his tenure on NYR, he hit 40 goals twice, was third in the entire league in goals scored last year. He scored more goals than everyone but Stamkos and Malkin. Even this season, this team has 4 wins and he pretty much got us two of them himself. He's not nearly as invisible as people say he is. His style is to lurk around and then find the open spot and snipe. He does it well, almost as well as anybody. Trading him for an overpaid d-man when we already have McD, Girardi, Staal and MDZ seems counterproductive to me.

Buying out Richards as early as possible isn't wise IMO. I'd say, if you buy him out at all, do it as late as possible. Regardless of his standing amongst all players, we need to think about his standing amongst centers that this team could get their hands on without gutting the system. There really aren't many options out there for first line centers. We waited years to get a guy like Richards. I wouldn't throw him away based on a poor 8 game sample that started after a lockout with a short camp and no preseason.

I don't think we need to make huge moves like that. I think this team needs to practice together more, needs to drastically alter the way they approach the PP and then wait until they get some confidence. Overreacting now could undo years of team building IMO.

I was concerned about the long term implications of the Richards contract when we signed him, but that time is not now.

1. Richards was never a great skater, and he doesn't have to be.

2. As I can't say enough, The power play and Richards are synonymous. As the PP gets better, so will Richards.

3. He hasn't been shooting enough. This is, I think a product pf playing with Nash and Gaborik. Put Stepan between those two, he'll stay higher and tend to the defensive responsibilities. Put Richards with Callahan and Kreider/Hagelin, and give him a more free offensive reign. I know you guys have noticed Richards getting too deep with Nash and Gaborik, only for the puck to leave the zone for a 3 or 4 on 2 the other way.

4. Yes, his decision making has been poor. I can't argue with that. But age doesn't make you go senile at 32. I think that will come with time.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if they use the buyout on him after the 13-14 season, depending on how far we go in the playoffs this and next year and or if a number one center emerges or signs.
