YOu missed the 4 - 5 which is 2 X 1st round + 2nd + 3rd.

Also important to note is the financial figures adjust with the cap, therfore up 12% for this upcoming year.

No those are the rules under the new CBA. But it's wishful thinking, cause anything under 4 mil, Clarkie is gonna match anyways.

It would take more then 5M to not get Clarke to match the offer. Gainey would have to offer 6-7 million.

I would sign Gagne for $5M if he would come here. I think it's necessary because of the improvements other teams in the East have made.

Well as I said if you adjust the figurs upwards you can sign Gagne for 5.5 and the compensation will be 2X 1st round + 2nd round + 3rd round.

NOt that much considering what you get in return. I would do it at 5.5 and hope that Clarke is willing to just take the picks. I would probably prefer to do it for Havlat if he would sign a long term deal at that rate.

You would give up 4 1st round picks for Gagne ? Don't forget, without Forsberg he is not a 50 goals scorer.

Since I think Gagne would help more than Havlat, I would offer less to Havlat. He shouldn't be making more than Koivu and Kovalev.

I think it's a myth that other Eastern clubs have improved.

Simon Gagne already got screwed once with a 2M 1 year deal last year. I think he wants a long term deal and at least twice more money per year.

I guess that's the real question. Spezza was in the same boat...do you believe you'll get a better player then Gagne or Spezza with your 4 first round picks? Not to say this is something I want to do but I'm just curious as to what anyone thinks.

Think about it (totally hypothecial(sp I know)). We offer Gagne a 5 year 6M a season contract, he accepts and the Flyers don't match. We give 4 1st rounders to Philly in exchange. We get a proven young 2 way player while Philly gets the unknown of 4 1st round picks. Is it a worthy gamble?

Try 5.5M per first that way it only costs 2 first rounders, 1 second and 1 third. Still I think Clarke would be willing to just take thepicks with the young talent on his team he can probably fill in the gap.

Well, certainly an interesting question you are posing Tuggy. As I said in another thread, the only RFA I'd be willing to pay that kind of a price for would be Havlat (already mentioned in this thread) and ONLY IF I could sign him long term to an acceptable contract. Havlat can be a "game breaker" single handed imo. Not sure Gagne has this same capability.

Is that those picks need to belong to our team and not traded and recieved by another. Also they must be in the first 2 (for two first round picks) of 3 drafts where we have said pick available. Therefore if we in each draft that we do not want to give them a pick trade down one spot for no extra consideration and I don't see why another team wouldn't want to move up one spot for no reason, we can continuously delay forfeiting our picks. I"ll have to double check but just glancing I saw no reason this would not work.
I'm pretty sure the picks are given when you get the players and the deal would be nullified if you don't have 2 of your next 3 first round picks (to stay in your example).

I don't know which team chooses the years (or is it the NHL ?), but if that's not the team that is offering the contract sheet, then, your trick would work to protect a particular draft, that is supposed to be stronger than the 2 others. But you'd have to deal your pick now to a team supposedly in the same range as yours at the end of the season you want to keep your 1st round draft pick.

Seems very complicated to me...

But no, I'm pretty sure your trick doesn't work to delay the "pick pay".

I am sure most french canadian players even if they grew up liking another team even qubec would love to play in monteal where they would be praised by the fans.... that is as long as they produced.

lol, yah....lets get gagne now...and watch other teams steal the likes of higgins, perezhogin, plekanec and kost from us when their time is due. No team is dumb enough to pluck off RA that happen to be star players, the flood gates will open and all hell will break lose.

If we want Gagne, we'll do it via the honorable way. Straight up trades. and No Doug, we're not going to offer the maximum to get an injured Tuomo Ruutu either.

forget ruutu, he's another daze. He's done nothing spectacular in his nhl career nor during his days playing in the finnish league. he's probably going to retire VERY early, sad really.

I'll be mad if Kovalev is traded. I love his cocky attitude, it gives the team character.
