You'd be very lucky to get a player of his caliber in the 5th round, the Kings did but now they trade him for another 5th rounder. That's like winning the lottery and buying lottery tickets with your winnings

Oh well, there wasn't any room for him on the Kings. He needs wingers who can score and the Kings don't have that in their bottom 6 and if a top 6 center goes down Carter just takes that spot, so there was realistically no way he'd ever make it with the Kings. He can play wing but his strengths are as a playmaker so he's best suited as a center.

I thought he'd fetch at least a mid round pick but he hasn't shown much in the past few years on the team and his AHL numbers aren't what they should be. Add to that the Russian factor (even if he seems committed to the NHL) and him asking for a trade I can see how the value is low. Good buy-low deal for the Devils though.

Sounds a lot like Tedenby. At this point, there's really no risk from a Devils standpoint, so I'm fine with it. We need forwards so badly everywhere, so it's a good acquisition for that reason.

I hope he isn't a Tedenby-esque player.
He's a slower version of Tedenby but with better IQ. So you take one of Tedenby's strengths away (skating) and take one of his weaknesses away (IQ). Similar weaknesses across the board, besides that.

Seems like an odd trend of these Mid 2000's LA picks going to the wayside.

Loktionov, Moller, Hickey. Voynov turned out to be the only real "sleeper" of their picks.

Oh okay, I just wasn't sure if he wanted traded so he could play in the NHL, but if the Devils intend on making him an NHL player, then that answers my question.

Those are two different players. Devils only lost one of those.

In the very same drafts, you picked players that were critical to a Stanley Cup team as well. Not everyone is going to work out for multiple reasons.

I could be wrong of course. But Matteau has been watching the last few games from the stands. If he plays in another game we waste one year of his ELC. So I assume he will go back to give Loktionov a chance.

That was a fluke, the Devils were like a 6th seed or something.

I don't like the return the Kings got but then again the Devils will now have to worry about him running back to the KHL if he doesn't get his way. In the end, it could be a low risk high reward for NJ.

Wait, WHAT???

Let's see.... Some bum named Quick was taken in the 3rd round, Martinez in the 4th, Dwight King was a 4th (I think), Nolan (7th), Clifford (2nd), Muzzin (FA), Drewiske (FA). That's a pretty decent haul for mid round picks and Overage Free Agents on one team.

My guess, too. Matteau goes back to junior and Loktionov comes up to play with Henrique (They were teammates in juniors).

Sometimes "future considerations" are in play. They're so loosely managed, so it's possible.

Somehow I can see him being a key piece of a cup run for the Devils a few years down the line.

I base that on nothing other than history, but they seem to be magicians at doing these minor deals for players that fit their system so well.
