Klinsmann's road struggles continue in WCQ though in reality 13-14 points should be enough to qualify...pretty much get 4 wins at home (Mexico at least draw at home) and then get 1-2 results away

I'm not going to jump off a bridge because Honduras is a quality side, but damn. ...

We should still qualify but with three really, really tough games still left (both Mexico's and @Costa Rica), it's going to be a real struggle.

That is where he is really good in his league though so I understand it. We are about to have the same situation in the Olympics for our hockey team. Pavelski is probably a center option for us, but he will have been on the wing for a couple straight years by the time we get to asking him to play center again.

Big mistake also leaving all of our explosive elements at home. All of our super sub options were gone. It is pretty clear to that Sacha Kljestan has no role on this team. He just isn't very good in a US jersey, he isn't Wondo bad, but I never see the same player I see for his club. He doesn't fit with our other players and he never makes an impact when he comes on.

I know he wants more from Gatt and Shea, but they provide elements when they suit up, they push the game.

I actually thought Edu played well after coming on.

Biggest positive for me is Beckerman didn't see the field.

They have some work cut out for them now with their schedule. I am also wondering when the American public outright turns on Donovan, if I was him I would have retired from International football, then asked back on later if that is his plan and we have seen other players do that internationally, not really in the US. However how he is doing it, I think people are going to turn on him in a big way.

They should still finish top 3, but the play in game is also pretty much a given for which ever team makes it as number 4, not something to forget when watching this play out. They just need to take care of home.

The bottom line is our defense is horrible and has been forever. The first goal, you just have to give credit where credit is due. But the second goal was ****ing embarrassing.

Obviously the weather was a factor for everyone, but Chandler in particular looked like he had just finished running a marathon.

Bradley will be the best American player for the next two World Cup cycles at least.

If he's the best for two cycles they won't qualify. He's alright but they need to improve.

Not the end of the world. Win them all at home and get some points on the road is the key to the hex. They are not done.

Can anyone explain how many qualifying games there are, and how many we need to win?

10 matches

usually 15-16 points is enough to qualify automatically...basically win your win matches and get a couple wins away from home

Does this team suck, or is Klinsmann not the man for the job?

I feel like this may be one of the weakest teams the US has had since I've started watching football. For a WC at least.

Am I way off?

I'm saying I think he's a decent but not great player in world football. If they can't get a few better players between now and 8 years, they're going to struggle to qualify.

It's not one of the weakest. Some pre94, 96 teams were pretty atrocious. But defensively they're one of the more disorganized and probably inexperienced. That's killing them.

Jurgen isn't a great tactical manager. He's an idea and organizational guy. That's the problem.

The team is decent, but they have absolutely no depth, even with the German-Americans added to the squad. If the US go through a period where one of Dempsey or Bradley is injured they are in trouble

They don't suck, it's just as Chimaera kind of said, we have no connection between the back 4 and the midfield. They're so disorganized. I like Klinsmann, but I think we'd be better off if he was in Sunil's role instead of manager.

As for the defense, it sure would be nice to have a, I don't know, Neven Subotic. He turned out to be a 10x bigger loss than Rossi will ever be.

Not having Boca to marshall the D yesterday really hurt. I agree Cameron & Omar are better backs physically, but reading the game and organizing the D they are way behind. The happiest player after yesterday's qualifier is Dolo because Chandler did not impress.

With qualifying, if they win all of their home matches and win in Jamica and Panama they will be safe. I'm not expecting points @ Mexico and even though Costa Rico has a very poor team this cycle, that place has traditionally been hard for the US to get points down there. If they start dropping home points then there could be a problem.

If I was a betting man, I'd say safe money is on Mexico, the US, & Honduras to qualify but I think the other three all have some chance to play Oceana champ (New Zealand) for a WC spot.

I agree with you on Dolo, but we're not going to see him until the summer, he just had surgery today. Chandler has to learn quick to be ready for CRC and MEX.

That's ridiculous. He was arguably their best player in the last World Cup and they won their group.

Frankly, I think he is a great player. But you're also implying that he won't improve. He's only, what, 25? He's the future captain of the team.

The reason the US might fail to qualify has to do with their back line and possibly Klinsy's tactics. We don't have the greatest talent in the world, but we're not that bad either. Certainly not fourth-best in CONCACAF.

In other news our U-20 backline is worse than the Senior team's.

Apparantly we're playing a friendly against the US at Cleveland on May 29. Hopefully this game is a bit better than back in 2011.
