Lol. Just give it up. Phaneuf will definitely not be on the team.

Reimer made the World Championships, a tournament only players from non-playoff teams play in (occasionally 1st round exits too) and even then, a lot of players just don't go anyway. Barring injuries, the best of the best go to the Olympics. Reimer is not even close to that level. Lupul is closer, but there are dozens of Canadian forwards more proven and deserving than him. One good year does not put him among the Canadian elite.

Fair statement. We have no studs right now.

I do believe that we need to pick the guy who is hottest going into the tournament, not MAF or Cam Ward just because they have been chosen for international teams before. Maybe guys like Mike Smith or Corey Crawford deserve a look.

In a gold medal/single elimination game, I want Richards, not Spezza. I like both guys, but you need to think about those final ten minutes.

I get caught up in the "This is Out House" mentality.
It really isn't close on paper, but the US does have a lot of guys that perform well in all facets of the game. In terms of skill and depth though, Canada blows away every country.

And what are Canada's other options? (Honestly asking. Not too familiar with team Canada's roster.)
Hopefully I'm not missing anyone, but the other D options include:

Myers--sucking
Subban--too soon?
Campbell--I could see it on the big ice
Phaneuf--
Green--See Campbell
Bouwmeester--can eat minutes, but that's about it
Seabrook--if they want the chemistry with Keith
Giordano--steady and solid, if unspectacular
MacDonald--see Giordano
Boyle--could see it, was there last time around
Bieksa--not sure how well he'd translate to the big ice
Hamonic--too soon?

Really, aside from maybe Campbell or Boyle (or Green, though he might be too one-dimensional), Coburn vs the other guys is pretty much a wash.

The Kane pick might raise eyebrows but like I said, I'm not just choosing the best guys necessarily. Team Canada will already have more skill than a team ever needs. I think Kane's size and pure athleticism lends a nice compliment.

Not that Kane isn't skilled, but this is a team where Toews-Bergeron-Perry is the shutdown/grind line. Skill comes as a higher definition here.

Jason Spezza has really improved his 2 way game. I'd rather have Spezza, who is big, skates well and has tremendous offense. Also probably a better FO man than Richards

Spezza never gets any love even after carrying a team of kids into the playoffs and putting up 4th best points in the league and being voted 6th overall in the Hart race. @_@

He deserves to be there.

Also yeah...Spezza is one of the better faceoff guys in the league and his two-way game has become very good. In fact Alfredsson called him the best defensive player on the team. People just don't give him enough respect.

My team?

James Neal - Sidney Crosby - Corey Perry
Martin St. Louis - Steven Stamkos - Claude Giroux
Rick Nash - Jason Spezza - John Tavares
Taylor Hall - Jonathan Toews - Jordan Eberle

Eric Staal, Evander Kane

Shea Weber - Alex Petriangelo
Duncan Keith - Kris Letang
Marc-Edouard Vlasic - Drew Doughty

Mark Methot, Brent Seabrook

Carey Price
Roberto Luongo
Marc-Andre Fleury

Seabrook is an easy one.
Hamhuis?

Boyle and Campbell are two older guys who could take a spot. Bouwmeester would be a deep sleeper. I personally think Vlasic would be a good fit and is undervalued.

Subban over Coburn?

Ferraro's list is essentially who it would be if they were competing today, but within a year we could see guys like Del Zotto, Ju. Schultz, Ellis, Oleksiak, Savard all take big steps forward. Or guys like Green return to form.

And people will automatically scorn this idea, but we should give Phaneuf a look.

There is a HUGE number of guys that could fill up that last spot on the taxi squad, depending on what the GM feels is the biggest need.
There's arguments to be made for Garrison, Bieksa, Giordano, Gorges, Klein, Beauchemin, Jackman, White, Wideman, Demers, MacDonald, or Schenn, and more.

Some people would say it's an easy decision, and there are definitely some names easier to cross of that list than others, but if the GM really wants to defend their gold, they had better consider and take a look at all their options, instead of just taking the easy names.

Intangibles etc...yada yada

You need to get to the gold medal game first before you worry about the final 10 minutes. I'll take the better 2 way player in Spezza in any situation. If Richards is so clutch were was he in the playoffs every year? He's a hard worker but not fast enough and provides almost no offense.

Can it really be that exciting to be a Canadian fan during the Olympics? I imagine it would be like being a USA fan during basketball. You are expected to dominate the competition so winning isn't a big deal, but if you lose then you just feel embarrassed.

Quick catch! Thanks!

I tried making a big list to showcase the options, and I did it really fast, so there's probably other slip ups too! :O
