I've seen him a few times this season, he's always a guy that stands out, not just because of his size. He seems so much farther ahead of others his age when it comes to two-way skills, and he is by no means a slouch offensively.
He had 51 points playing midget hockey last year, and has already reached 51 points this year in the Q. I'd say he's a late bloomer, but he's still 17 until the end of April, which has to make one wonder how dominant this guy could be once he really starts to round out his frame, and gains more experience.
I won't even try to guess where he should/will go in the draft, I just haven't seen much of most players outside the QMJHL, but if we end up taking Gauthier I'll be thrilled.
One thing I noticed about Gauthier is for a big guy he's pretty smooth out there. He's a good skater and his strides aren't awkward like most big guys. He also has a pretty strong wrister. I had read though that he was very aggressive, but I didn't see that in my viewings. He seemed a little passive actually, though it was a small sample size. I don't like passive big players, but I'll give the scouting reports the benefit of the doubt.
Drouin 3 points tonight, 71 in 34 games. 3 more than Nate in 6 less games.
Funny thing is he didn't play terribly well tonight. 2 goals were right place right time tap ins in the paint. His assist was nice but otherwise turned the puck over a lot and was pretty ineffective. Kept blowing the defensive zone way too early and his line got hemmed in several times because of it. But the whole team was doing that tonight.
MacKinnon looks like he best player on the ice whenever he's out there. The wheels and hustle are unbelievable. He's been snakebite lately though. Enough so that I'm concerned if he has the elite finishing needed to be a top goal scorer at the next level. Kid has the "it" factor that guys rave about. Comes up huge when the game is on the line and in big moments. Tied the game up and sent it to OT from his back in the 3rd.
Focused a lot on Gauthier tonight as desrosiers and morin were out. Looked decent. You can see the natural tools and he was used head to head with Mackinnons line all night. Not gonna contain them, nobody does, but he held his own. Great on the PK and had a few chances but no finish. Slow skater but powerful. Uses his body well. Not the skillset I'd want to draft in the top 10 but he's got a great frame and mindset that you can pretty much guarantee he'll be an NHLer at some point. Tough to say much more after only one game.
He said Trainor, Lavoie, and their goalie Gusse really impressed him from Rimouski. Said Gauthier was strong, played a solid game, and though he didn't have any points, was usually out shutting down the Moose's top line. Overall, said it was a really exciting, even game, and that Rimouski was the toughest team he's seen them play against this year.
