For Leafs fans:

No, we're not going to trade Kassian+ for Kessel.
Gillis wants this team to be bigger and tougher. Kessel is the exact opposite of that.

This would be a terrific trade for the Leafs...and one I wouldn't want as a canucks fan.

Just so I can visualize this, what would your roster look like without Kassian + Schneider, but with Kessel?

When healthy of course.

Kessel would probably play on the 3rd line.

He wouldn't play with the Sedins since they need a defensive/gritty guy on their line.
He wouldn't play with Kesler and Booth on the 2nd line since they're both shooters and they need a playmaker on their line.

Giving up Kassian + Schneider for a soft guy to play on the 3rd line is a waste of assets.

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Booth - Kesler - Higgins
Raymond - Schroeder - Kessel
Malhotra - Lapierre - Hansen

Yeah, but it's Kessel. I guess I'll go retreat back to the Leafs board, to the team I cheer for...

How long till somebody realizes?

Kessel would play on the 2nd line...one of Booth or Higgins would be bumped to make room for him. It's not like Booth and Higgins are playmakers either...

Kessel has shown that he doesn't play well with a shoot-first center (Grabovski).

The AMEX line has played very well in the past.

Good point. However I don't see how Kessel gets the icetime to make the trade worthwhile then.

Even if he got first-powerplay unit with the Sedins, there's no way he could average 20 minutes playing on the 3rd line.

Did someone say hes the best offensive defense-man? Cause i think theres a few guys a head of him.

As for his last two years hes been beset by injuries. Never the less dynamic he is.
I did, although I did qualify it with "when healthy". I don't think there's any defenseman that is as talented as he is all-around offensively. Karlsson has nicer playmaking skills and passing but Green has an absurd shot. When healthy he absolutely drives a team's offense, but he's been playing injured and in a ultra defensive system for a few years now.

Of course, there's no guarantee he'll ever be healthy again. I think he's worth the risk just because the potential payoff is obscene but I understand wanting to avoid even more injury risks on our blue line. Also would depend on the trade, I think the one I was reading was Green + some prospect + 1st for Luongo.

I said no to Green earlier, but if they're willing to take Ballard off our hands I'd say yes.

Luongo and Ballard for Green, 2014 1st, prospect/+

Edler can play on the his natural left side with Tanev as his partner, Green can play the right side alongside Garrison.

1st unit PP:

Sedins-Kesler/Kassian
Edler-Green

What about something around Kessel, Kulemin, Reimer/Scrivens for Booth, Schneider, Raymond? I think a lineup of:

Sedin-Sedin-Kassian
Kulemin-Kesler-Kessel
Burrows-Schroeder-Higgins
Hansen-Lappiere-Weise
Malholtra

would make us much more dangerous. Since it actually makes a positive influence on our cap this year, we can acquire a 3rd line C at the deadline if Schroeder isn't playoff ready.

Don't want any part of Kessel if it involves sending Schneider the other way.

If we're dealing Schneider we can do much better than Kessel, not to mention our trade partners wouldn't be limited to just a few teams since there's no NTC.

Where does this commonly accepted notion come from? He hasn't had a season with Toronto where he was playing with Grabovski more often than not and he's shown he can be an assist machine. He had 45 assists last season playing with Lupul and Tyler freaking Bozak.

Wilch, who are these better players we could get for Schneider? Kessel would be an amazing haul for a Schneider trade.

Hmmm... posting from Colorado.

I gotta ask... are you the real Tim Thomas?

I laughed.

Do people hate Kessel because he looks like a bum? Add that to the fact that Burke's trade was brutal, I guess it makes him an easy target but he's criminally underrated 'round here. He'd slot in as our 3rd best offensive player easily. Who knows what Kesler looks like when he returns and who knows how long he's healthy.

I think people forget that he's only 25, he's a year younger than Schneider...I think he would be a pretty great return for Schneider.

I thought about pointing that out in my post, then felt it would detract from my point...not Tim Thomas, there is no chance Tim Thomas has internet access in whatever cave he is holed up in out in the mountains.

I'd much rather have Kassian's toughness than Kessel's softness, especially in the playoffs.

I'd rather have the guy that will put up points when it matters. Kessel has done that in his 15 playoff games (15 points, baby). Kassian would never be part of any possible Kessel trade (that won't happen to begin with), so I don't really get your point. As Tiranis mentioned, Schneider + Kassian for Kessel is a brutal non-starter. It would be Schneider and a prospect and/or pick. It ain't happening though.
