I'm a big Simon Gange fan... I think it's at least worth Gaineys time to give Clarkie a ring and see what it would take to get Gange via trade if Philly doesnt want to dish out the $$$.

kovalev AND price for gagne?..wow.

why would we draft price in the top 5 and then trade him? does he have faith in halak and danis? if that's the case why would we even draft a goalie at number 5?

i don't know what to think of it, but having gagne would make me happy. but losing a top 5 pick, sucks.

True, there's no Forsberg, and Ribeiro wouldn't be able to make him a 50 goal man. But he'd still score more goals than anyone else on the team.

Are you sure about the 4 firsts? A lot of different versions of the CBA have been bandied about on this thread.

Anyway, the whole thing is moot. Clarke would match the offer, then probably turn around and offer to trade him, but he'd want too much. So Gagne would stay in Philly.

yes but imagine ; if he gets 50 goals with Forsberg , he would have how much playing with Saku !!!! 60-65 !!!

Yes.

What, you don't believe that Koivu is better than Forsberg? Well, neither do I. However, since you're sooo concerned about injuries, you might note that Forsberg has a history of missing games that rivals Koivu's.

By the way, the price for signing Gagne as an RFA in the bracket discussed ($4.5-5M) would NOT include 4 first rounders; it would be 2 firsts, a second, and a third. IMO that's easily tolerable. Frankly, I don't think Clarke would allow Gainey to get away with just signing Gagne. He'd match the offer and insist on a sign-and-trade deal that included several of the Habs' best young players. I wouldn't like that.

That's IF he really accepts "only" $4.5 million. We all know players want to be compensated for the tax situation in Montreal (even the home-boys), so it could cost us over $5 million, which would be four first round picks.

Bobby Clarke is probably HOPING somebody offers Gagne a contract.

Lose Gagne, sign Samsonov?

Gagne for Samsonov and four first rounders? Pfff! Clarke is laughing. Imagine what he could do with EIGHT first round picks over the next four years (his original four, and the four he gets for Gagne).

“Hey Chicago, you have the 1st overall pick, how about we give you our two firsts this year, a first next year and another first the year after?”

He’d get the 1st overall, and still have four first round picks over the next three years.

By the way, the compensation rules are on page 38 of the new CBA:

http://www.nhlpa.com/CBA/index.asp

IF you read that section of teh CBA, those numbers adjust as the cap adjusts. the Cap went up 12%, so you can increase the 5M upper end limit on the compensation range by 12%, off hand it's like 5.6 or something like that.. A little more room to work with

Keep reading. That clause only kicks in for the 2006/07 season.
