I think Gus is an enormous upgrade over Foster. He can move the puck out of the defensive zone, which is our biggest weakness. Hopefully he plays well tonight and they get him up here ASAP.

no top end talent but the top 6 rankings are all but guaranteed to be NHL players. so isn't not terrible but it's definitely not ideal either.

Maybe guaranteed to play some games in the NHL, but I don't think any of those players outside of Laughton, Cousins, and McGinn are guaranteed to have serious NHL careers (not necessarily a comment on how good they will be, more the longevity). Laughton is a lock to have a long career. Cousins seems like he will be around a while. McGinn because of his size and style should also make a living in the NHL. The rest of the crop are still a long ways off to even think about calling them guarantees. Ghost is smaller but he looks like he has the skill and ability from what I have seen to possibly make it, but I don't think he is anywhere near a guarantee to be a full-time NHLer over a long career. Noebles I think his closer of a lock than Ghost because of his size, but still not a guarantee. I think to call any goalie a guarantee at this point in his career is risky, and Stolarz doesn't seem to be an exception to this. But I do agree that the overall crop is not terrible, but also not ideal. Haha.

I don't think it's a bad group of prospects. I think it's a real sleeper group. For instance, Taylor Leier (one of a few players on the list I'm high on) has a Kris Versteeg upside to his game. Collin Sullentrop has finally put it together with Oshawa and has shown shut down capabilities. Anthony Stolarz has the chance to be a crown jewel now that he's getting playing time in London and he's working with probably the best goaltending coach in all of junior hockey. There's plenty of reasons to be optimistic. It's quiet optimism, but optimism none the less.

I thought Akeson was Versteeg? Which one is it?

i guess you missed the "all but" before the word guarantee

i just meant they have a good chance but i should have just said that.

You can make a case for both players having Versteeg-like upside. And as much as the Flyers seem to take a real liking for two-way players, you can never have enough of them throughout the system.

Tough night for Stolaz. Let in 4 goals on 21 shots in a 4-3 OT loss.

No, no, no, you're getting his comparisons confused.

Akeson = Versteeg

Voracek = Jagr but without the mullet

B. Schenn = Mike Richards w/ 40-50 goal upside

Wayne Simmonds = Black Gretzky

Sean Couturier = Joe Thornton but with 10 or so Selke awards.

So out of curiosity, if McGinn is listed at six with Noebels above him, why not give Noebels a shot? I don't know much about him, is he still in junior?

Noebels is in his first year as a pro while McGinn is in hus 2nd year. They are both similar players in the sense if size but Noebels has the upside to be better offensively. Also Noebels is only 20 while McGinn is 22. Their trying to let him get used to the pro game

Ah, I see. Thanks for the response. I don't follow the Phantoms as closely as I would like.

My OP wasn't to say that I don't think McGinn has done a great job, I like the kid and I think he's looked good in his role. He had a great chance last night on a nifty move in front that he could've buried.

I think mine would be (assuming we going back to the rule of no Wellwood, Gus or Harry Z)

Flyers Top 15 Prospects
1. C Scott Laughton
2. C Nick Cousins
3. D Shayne Gostisbehere
4. LW Tye McGinn
5. LW Marcel Noebels
6. LW Taylor Leier
7. D Oliver Lauridsen
8. RW Mike Parks
9. G Anthony Stolarz
10. C Jason Akeson
11. D Brandon Manning
12. G Cal Heeter
13. F Andrew Johnston
14. D Fredric Larsson
15. D Colin Suellentrop

I haven't seen even 3 seconds of VV so thats why hes off of my list (he might be great but I don't feel right ranking a guy I've never seen). I'm not quite as high on Stollie as some of you. Johnston just needs a year to adjust his game I think and we will see him in a better role next year with the Phantoms. Its gotta be hard to come from the SJHL to pro. Larsson seems like he is cut from the Flyers cloth.

Looking at my list from the off season the guys moving way up are :McGinn who continues to impress me big time, Leier, and Ghost. Most of the guys on their way down fell right off like Nico, Brown, Holmstrom (not his fault) and Mangene

One name that I do think should be at 15 is Reese Wilcox. I remember Homer comparing him to Coburn, and at the prospect camp, that was a good description. 6'4 defender who skates VERY well and is always in the right position. Wont be flashy offensively but doesnt need to be. Also I think we are forgetting Mark Alt. Dont know where he would be placed, but he has the athleticism to be a decent defender. Obviously a down season so far, but after two solid season, willing to give him some benefit. Seems like a really smart kid (all academic team) so hoping he gets his game back together.

I feel a bit better about our prospect pool than the summer. In my mental picture of where they could be, Laughton, Cousins, Ghost, McGinn and Noebels are way up, while Manning has fallen. I'll call the Stolaz improvement and the removal of Hovinen a wash for me because I have low expectations of goaltending prospects. If one works out, we win there.

Overall, given the state our farm system, I am completely opposed to trading anything higher than a third round pick for help to this year's Flyers. We need the high end talent to replenish our ranks.

I really dont want to be trading high draft picks either. Enough of this "its only a 2nd rounder" for rentals.
Guys just need to to start playing the way they are capable of.

I think it's worth pointing out that since Derek Mathers was appointed captain in January of the Petes, he has I believe 10 points in 13 games.
