Good move for Philly. Losing Carle appears to have hurt the team a lot more than is should have. Meszaros is alright for moving the puck but he can't run a powerplay. There weren't a lot of options this offseason and Kimmo was probably the best one. Expensive, but it's a good stop gap until they can sign, trade, or develop something long term.

Ottawa might have to do the same thing with Gonchar if he's willing. Injuries (Cowen, Lundin) and lack of experience (Wiercioch, Boro, Ceci, Claesson, etc...) dictate what a stop gap might be needed as well. Especially with Phillips aging as well.

Kimmo has been really good this year. Especially last night. He was awesome against one of the top lines in the league. Overpay? Maybe. But considering Giroux is being criminally underpaid, we'll take it.

Good luck trying to get a PMD for 4.

Good for Kimmo, was sort of hoping he'd return to where it all began (Nashville, not Finland), but you can't have everything.

Even at his age, no way the market would see him go anywhere below $5M, let alone approaching $4M, IMO.

I find it humorous that the only people saying its too much for him are people outside of Philly that don't see him play every game. The Flyers board usually crucifies every deal Homer gives out but this one seems unanimous for the most part. It's one year at less than he's currently making. He's still a first pairing dman that plays in all situations and is good at both ends of the rink.

The Flyers would have needed to fill the void if Kimmo left. With Giroux, Couturier, Schenn, and Read all due for a raise after next season they couldnt afford to give anyone a long term deal that would eat up that money.

I agree. However I do hope there is no no trade clause in the extension. That gives us 5 solid defensemen. Kimmo and Luke work well together, and with Nick and Mez and Coburn, that is not to shabby. Bruno and maybe one of the kids steps up to fill the 6 and 7 spot next season.

Damn. In the fictional world where the Caps were somehow contending at the deadline, I was hoping to add Kimmo as a trade deadline addition.

$6m, meh. Its for only year. People get to caught up in AAV when I think they should be focusing on the total a player gets throughout the term on his contract. 1 year, $6m for Timonen isn't bad. Now if he got 18m over 3 years, different story.

Agreed. 1-year deals should face much less scrutiny. Plus, as others have mentioned, Philly rally had no plan B here.

In a season where the Flyers have extra cash under the cap.

Yep...agreed. Term is just as, if not more, important. This really isn't a bad deal at all.

WOOF $6 mil is a lot but it's only for a year and his cap hit is already high as is.

Interesting note; if they had some inclination that he'd be brought back, wouldn't it have made sense to make him captain over Giroux? I know quite a few people threw his name in the hat for Flyers' captaincy and was surprised he didn't get it.

I think both would have been good choices for the C but the Flyers are clearly Girouxs team. As they say, you don't need a C on your jersey to be a leader.

Bit high but never mind. He's up there with my favourite Flyers of all time and is one of the classiest guys in the league.

This is the important factor for me. The Flyers blueline would be absolutely CRUSHED by losing Timonen at this point. At this point, they delay the inevitable of having to find a replacement by kicking the can one year down the road.

Little bummed and happy about this at the same time. Overpaid by a good mil to mil and a half but we need him since the UFA crop is weak.
