Rangers/Avalanche (Ryan O'Reilly)

Just curious to hear if the value would match up

Avalanche get:

D Michael Del Zotto
C Brian Boyle
D Stu Bickel

Rangers get:

C Ryan O'Reilly
D Tyson Barrie
G Sami Aittokallio

Pretty good value (considering O'Reilly isn't signed)...but I'd prefer to take both Bickel and Aittokallio out of the equation.

Del Zotto
Boyle

O'Reilly
Barrie

The Rangers were just playing hardball with Del Zotto and eventually got him to sign a two-year bridge contract. That's exactly what the Avs are doing with O'Reilly right now but so far he hasn't agreed.

Why would the Rangers now trade Del Zotto and deal with this O'Reilly headache?

Assuming the Rangers can sign O'Reilly to a reasonable contract

Id consider this real hard. Pretty good value for both teams. Still kinda iffy on giving up on Barrie. If Joe Succo gave him actual offensive zone ice time. I feel like he would solve a lot of our offensive problems.

I don't know. Can somebody please tell me a bit more about Boyle?
Is he good defensively? His stats don't look that good.

Del Zotto is a great player for sure but is he a good all-around defender or is it all offense with him?

I wouldn't like to give up Barrie or Aittokallio.

Keep the 3 and Just give us McDonagh and Stepan and we'll throw in OBrien, Zanon, and Kobasew

Honestly MDZ and Boyle for ROR and Barrie is pretty intriguing. One of the better ones I've seen lately.

I'm not overly thrilled by the idea of acquiring Del Zotto, he's never struck me as the type to develop into a top pairing defender and I feel aside from his offensive poise, EJ would be covering for his mess as much as anyone else we'd put with him.

Keep Barrie and see what he's got down the road, Elliott is promising too. We can find a better offer elsewhere.

Also, heck no to the OP. O'Reilly for Del Zotto is probably fair, including Barrie and Aitto for Boyle and Bickel is terrible on our part. If Hunwick can undress you, you're not NHL material.

If MDZ is the best we can get for O'Reilly, that's trouble.

I like the idea of having a young, promising goalie in the system and it seems that the Avalanche have a glut of promising goalies in the farm.

Easy no for me.

Bickel and Boyle aren't needed at all, and Oreilly holds more value then MDZ.

So its basically Oreilly++ for MZD, when it should be MDZ+ or at most MDZ straight across for ROR.

Bad deal for the Avs.

And the overrating of O'Reilly continues...

I know. It's so annoying when all the Avs fans here start threads with trade proposals for him, asking for the moon.

Honestly though, MDZ for ROR is about fair value wise IMO, but MDZ isn't really the kind of DMan needed in Colorado.

lol what? Colorado has 0 goals from our defense this year so far. I'd say he's exactly what we need and in a big way.

Trust me, I'm frustrated with any Rangers fan proposing trades for him to begin with. If the Avs won't give him the contract that he wants, Glen Sather sure as hell won't. On top of that, the Rangers' center depth is Richards-Stepan-Miller-Boyle right now. On D, they have the big 4 (Staal, McD, Girardi and MDZ) and then some re-treads and also-rans (though in fairness, Stralman has played well). EVEN if you thought the Rangers could sign O'Reilly, and EVEN if you knew that the O'Reilly of last year was the real version (rather than the guy who only put up half the production the two previous years), it STILL wouldn't make sense for the Rangers to trade for him.

But while such trade threads that ignore team needs do reflect poorly on Rangers fans, it's still ridiculous what Avs fans seem to think he's worth (Del Zotto, as a defenseman, has scored at the same rate as O'Reilly--there is no world in which O'Reilly is an equal or more valuable player--I've also seen Avs fans scoff at returns like Sharp or Kessel).

You have a young player with one above average year. He's making himself into a distraction by holding out AFTER a long lockout. Frankly, the hold-out makes me suspect that even O'REILLY isn't sure he can repeat last year's performance. With all of those things working against the Avs, they aren't going to "win" a trade for O'Reilly (ie- get a player of equal value but without the contract drama) and they sure as hell aren't going to fleece anyone in a trade for him either (getting a BETTER player without the contract drama).

But as I said--this ultimately has nothing to do with the Rangers. They don't need O'Reilly and with Sather's track record on hold-outs, they likely want nothing to do with him either.

Just as an FYI--Del Zotto has been a very good two way defenseman for more than a year now.
