Clarke: "There's still one more signing we would like."

"We're talking with one other player at this stage," Clarke said. "We don't know whether we'll be able to get him or not. There's still one more signing we would like."

If there is only 1 that's not good enough. But if there is only 1 left I can almost guarentee you he is not Czech or Russian.

I like the sound of 'we don't know if we can get him" because I'd be willing to bet the first 3 signings they were pretty sure they would make that happen without much problem. This must mean other people might actually want this player.

I also like 'this stage' because regardless of what happens, that doesn't mean he isn't done talking with players.

If it's a forward I hope it's Brendan Shanahan, because he'd be a great linemate for Jeff Carter, a very smart player and even though he is older, he brings a lot of experience and is also a good leader.

Gormley mentions that Carter is most likely out of the Flyers' salary availability. I'd pass on Carter. Inflated stats with the Sedin twins.

http://www.courierpostonline.com/news/sports/index.html

FROM GORMLEY: First, even with Robitaille they still need to sign a free-agent right wing who can still play but won't cost them more than $2 million. That probably takes them out of the running for Vancouver's Anson Carter, who is seeking more than $3 million a season.

George Laraque it will be. When was the last time the Flyers have not had a legit heavyweight? This going to be one soft team to play against. Eager while he hits a like a truck will not strike any fear in opposing teams and is not a heavyweight.

In regards to Laraque, we're trying to rid Brashear from our lineup, not sign his twin. (and no, that has nothing to do with race)

agreed. A lot of Flyers fans are worried about the team being "soft" or having "an enforcer". The new NHL is soft and enforcers are dinosaurs. Like it or not, this is the future.

What is Carolina’s organizational philosophy? Flyers have always had a fighter on their team. You really think that part is going to change. They wont have a heavyweight to start the season than when they get pushed around Clarke will make a trade for one. You can book that scenario.

Actually, Carolina did have an enforcer, but traded him in the Doug Weight trade

Shanahan would be a perfect wingman for Carter & Umberger. Wishful thinking, but, sure am pulling for it.

As good as Shanahan is, I don't think we want another player who's old and injury prone.
Not sure who Clark is trying to pick up, but i don't think it will be a tough guy. With Preems and Richards on our team, other teams will think twice about taking liberities. We don't really need an enforcer when we have a team that sticks up for each other and plays as a team.

Shanahan has not missed more than 10 games in a season since 1989

I'd take Jim Dowd; he is a serviceable forward, no better than 3rd line, and because of that, the team will still be lacking scoring, but at least he is defensively sound.

There are some free agents out there who would be welcome additions:
Sergei Samsonov, Brendan Shanahan, Anson Carter

And there are some free agents out there who would fit in with our team concept of so far...
Vaclav Varada, Dean McAmmond, Boyd Deveraux...you see where I'm going

hell lets sign Lindros
