I'd give Shans 5.5 for 1 one year in a heartbeat.

Even with that contract we'd still have plenty of wiggle room.

Plus we could trade him at the deadline for a 1st rounder.

That's a good point. If the Kings aren't close to a playoff spot, he could fetch something rather valuable at the deadline. That would likely mitigate the overpayment.

looking at DL's signings so far, I'd say more likely a 2 year deal

If DL offers him 5.5M for one year, he'd be a fool not to take it.

Please DL do it!

I would love to see Shanny be a King...could get 25-35, help the PP, etc. But the biggest thing is that he has STANLEY CUP RINGS and that is huge.

Maybe a 2-year, 9.5M deal? I think 5.5 is just a little much.

Guys, he was earning in the 6+ range a few seasons ago. The guy scored 39 goals last year! I'd give him 5.5

Shanahan was in Los Angeles Tuesday, talking to the Kings, as he continues to explore the free-agent market.

I'd take Shanahan over any of the available free agents at this point. He's been a solid player his entire career, and has always produced. Think what a great mentor a guy like that could be to our young talented prospects.

He seems like the perfect guy to continue the legacy of mediocrity that is the kings.

That's very good news.

Original speculation was that Shanahan would end up in either Boston, Montreal, or St. Louis. But that's looking more and more unlikely.

Montreal has reportedly signed Poti and Sykora.

Boston signed Chara and Savard. Also there is reported conflict between Shanahan and B's coach Dave Lewis.

St. Louis has signed Guerin and Weight.

Yeah, right. I guess Shanahan's career, or even current skills is deemed mediocre by your estimation. Well I'll just assume it's luck then.............something the Kings need a little of anyway.

Yeah? When was the last time the Kings signed a guy who just scored 40 goals?

More I think about it, the more I'm ok with the money. He's clearly the best free agent left, and maybe the only one that had the leadership qualities that he does.

You missed tomd's point. The "legacy of mediocrity" is due to their finish either just in or just out of the playoffs for the last 7 or 8 seasons. This has meant that the Kings have an incredibly strong first round opponent if they make the playoffs AND a mid first round drafting position. Never good enough to deep into the playoffs and not bad enough to get a shot at the quality prospects.

The Kings should pick up Shanahan only if he is the final piece of the team that will strongly contend for the Cup.

not at all...he is a very good player and with him in the lineup, the kings will be battling for somewhere between 7th and 11th in the conference. once again, simply aspiring to make the playoffs. isn't that the very definition of the mediocrity we have seen over the past several years. isn't that what DL said the kings can no longer afford?

The Red Wings board has multiple calls for Holland's head if he offers Shanny 4 million - but somehow 5.5 is seconded here? Ouch. http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=265959

The guy made 2.28 last year, and although he does deserve a raise and another bump to get him to leave Det for LA - 3 seems more than solid if it's also in a 2 year deal.

6 to 6.5kk / 2 year deal. I heart Shanny and would love to hear the Irish jig song played in Staples 15-20 times a year for his home goals.

PS. I hope shanny's passed that whole Tim Gleason debacle! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRcrn-3DC-w

Sorry for the misinterpretation, my bad. My views on us finishing the season just out of the playoffs, and primed for another #11 pick are a bit different though. First of all it would be very bad business for the Kings to not atleast be competitive. If we finish the year with O'Sullivan and Kopitar in the lineup all season and finish in the ninth spot, it means that they have grown and contributed all season. Secondly, with the addition of Blake on defense, the acquistion of hard working character guys, and blossoming young talent, it would be hard for me to believe that we would be worse than last year.

If it's only for one year then who cares?

And like I've said before, if it doesn't work out we can trade him at the deadline for a 1st rounder.

Well the oilers finished in 8th and made it to the 7th game of the cup final. The playoffs are a completely different story, especially if Garon proves to be a playoff performer.

and that is why people buy lottery tickets...blind hope and faith in extreme longshots. as long as there are 18,000 fans who feel the same way, the kings will never be forced to improve to the point where they are a legitimate contender...just get to the playoffs and pray.

God knows there will certainly be tickets available.

And technically, Anaheim is only about 40 miles from LA.
