First off, is that the RZA in a Rangers jersey?

Second, I doubt he does. I doubt he ever plays a single game for Long Island.

If Lindberg comes over, proves he's NHL ready and ready to win draws and play PK for 82+ games we can talk about moving Boyle then. As for "a team gave up a 1st for Gaustad", Yes! A playoff competitor gave up a 1st to pick him up from a non-playoff team. We're the former, not the latter (hopefully) and thus we're not selling. Do I move Boyle for a 1st if we get our ducks in a row and look like we can compete this year? No. The 1st isn't going to kill penalties in the playoffs for us. We won't even see it in the lineup for 2-4 years. I'm not selling. Boyle and a pick for an upgrade on D and an okay depth forward: Maybe. Boyle for a pick: Absolutely not.
hey i'm fine with it if your right. As long as they can sign their RFA's next yr and don't have to move anyone sure.

I think Boyle will back in the lineup real soon because Torts does like the guy and was just setting an example. I think they bench Halpern over Asham though. For some reason the NYRs have to have a tough guy in the lineup and Asahm is waaay better than Bickel

I also think Boyle is going no where this yr becasue he does add depth plus Miller and Kreider are still unknows. It would be stupid to deal him now UNLESS they were to acquire an equal forward in his place plus a Dman

I think we are going to hear Boyle, Eminger, picks, prospect for a Dman and Forward though. Does not mean it will happen. More likely to happen is picks for rental UFAs and keeping the team as it is now.

Not Marc Bergevin.

I would, most likely. It's a fairly close swap. Eller has better offensive upside and isn't as good defensively, but still has a solid two-way game which will improve, as he's only 23. He's 6'2, very strong, plays physical, decent shot blocker. No idea why Montreal would make that swap. I'd do it on paper. During the course of the season, I'd be more hesitant as Eller's not likely to provide a lot more THIS year and will probably weaken the PK a little while disrupting the lockerroom and team dynamic further, by removing another character guy like Boyle from a team that's already missing a few.

Boyle is going nowhere.

If he does get moved, I'll eat crow until I have so many feathers coming out of my backside that you could call me a peacock.

yes that is RZA in a Rangers jersey.

I doubt he does too but it was looking like the isles were starting to settle on a goalie for the season and if he were to report, would make a mess of that.

That's the negative side of it.

The positive side of it returns Letang, better than Girardi IMO, and arguably on par on balance with Staal, so we are down 1 top D, but in return we got Neal a bonafide sniper who we can see as a 30+ maybe 40G guy.

Yeah, I threw in Stepan + Boyle + a 2nd but I got two 1sts, including one for next year.

So please feel free to comment on the whole picture, not one side of the trade. One side only projects an out of context picture as to real value.

Thanks.

We should be able to agree:
Boyle is productive and has value.
We are trying to figure out if he is worth more to us traded than here in our bottom 6.

Boyle will be going nowhere unless he is over valued by some GM and only then will Sather move him . He actually is over rated by a lot of the broadcasters if you listen to them and I happen to hear a lot of them with Bell CI . They all rave about Big Brian Boyle and his value to NY .

IMO...he is ok for his salary because he is flexible enough to play any forward position and kill penalties and is a good shot blocker and also very popular with his team judging by the HBO scenes . He is a perfect 4th line guy that can play 3rd line minutes when needed and we will need that because we won't be going the rest of the way injury free by any means . He will fight...but definitely does not come natural to him and he will never win one but he will go...which is important .

Keaton Ellerby to LA for a 5th.

How do we miss that?

Loktionov went to NJ for a 5th. Ben Lovejoy went to SJ for a 5th. Fistric to Edmonton for a 3rd. Now Ellerby to LA for a 5th.

We should have been in on at least one of those. People are talking about trading BOYLE for Ellerby and the guy goes for a 5th. What's Sather doing? Ellerby would be very steady for that third pairing.

I feel something with Montreal would make sense. They have good lower end forwards and defensemen. And a 1st round pick

Would it be tampering if we hypothetically called up Radulov and asked if he'd play for us if we traded for his rights?

No one would have been upset if we'd paid a 4th. The point is, the asking price is not high. Both Lovejoy and Ellerby would have been good #6 options. At such a marginal price, I hope we were at least inquiring.

What's the obsession with picking up a 1st round pick? 1st round picks cost. We're not sellers. We should be buying rentals at the deadline. Not moving pieces that can help to gain a draft pick that won't be a Ranger for years to come. The window to win is now, before that first would ever be NHL ready, while Lundqvist, Richards, etc. are still fresh enough to get it done.

Keaton Ellerby, Ben Lovejoy... these are not names that are upgrades on Steve Eminger or Stu Bickel or Matt Gilroy.

My thoughts exactly.

Are people advocating this because they think these guys will help the team? Or is it because these guys are NOT Bickel or Gilroy?

1. Too expensive, even if the Caps cover part of his salary. We're already going to have trouble keeping everyone in the next couple years with the signings we're going to have to make - don't need to make it any harder to keep guys.

2. Does not fit the system. He has not a defensive bone in his body. And though he was forced to play a bit more of a defensive system with the Caps' coach last year, I expect him to revert to the Ovy of the old days who doesn't do any of those things, and have seen a bit of that this year already. We would end up paying huge money for Torts to bench him all game. And I guarantee you that would happen - Ovy has had plenty of conflicts with coaches/teammates in the past.

3. He does not play with consistent heart and desire. He does not hustle on a game-by-game basis. You think the moaning on these boards about Gaborik being invisible for certain games is bad? Get Ovy and see what happens.

4. I've lived in D.C. for a few years and know people who have run into him out in the club/bar scene here multiple times. He has a reputation for having a bad attitude, parties a little bit too hard even during the season, and doesn't do the hard work to stay in shape in the off season. I want none of that in the Rangers locker room.

5. Ovy has had a decidedly downward trend in the past few years. Do you want to return to the Rangers management between 97 and 04 whose strategy was to go after the big name players who were past their prime? Cuz if so, Ovy fits that bill. Not saying he still doesn't have skill, but he certainly isn't what he used to be and isn't worth the $$.

If all that sounds good to you... by all means, go for it.
Obviously a huge risk. Albeit I wasn't super serious on Ovechkin, I really think a change of scenery would do him wonders. And if there's any coach that's a match for him it's Torts.

Like I said it would really have to be almost like a sweet heart kinda deal with Washington covering a sizable amount of salary. Basically it won't happen. At the very least not until the Caps actively shop him and somehow get that desperate.

Yes they are. Gilroy has played well since getting a shot. If he keeps it up, I will change my tune on him. He seems to have finally settled into a role at the NHL level that he can handle successfully and in a solid fashion. If that keeps up, I'll be sold on him. For now though, you're underrating Lovejoy. Ellerby is a bit more raw but still young with good upside and size. Certainly both are upgrades over Bickel, and what we're used to seeing from Gilroy. Eminger, I'm not sure why hasn't been playing over Bickel from day one. You underrate Lovejoy though; he was stuck behind a few guys in Pittsburgh, whose organizational strength is defensive prospects (Poulliot, Maata, Morrow, Harrington, Dumoulin and Despres) but he is going to have a career as a solid bottom pairing guy. No real holes in his game. Solid d-man.

Because looking at what Gaustad got, we could easily get a serviceable player AND a 1st for Boyle

For a 5th, I gamble on Ellerby, who is a former 1st, still young, very nice size, has time to improve and IS better than Bickel.

Lovejoy, I think is severely underrated and already ready to be a steady bottom pair guy. I think he just got stuck behind people in Pittsburgh and passed by high-end prospects like Despres and Morrow who look really good. I believe he's a competent #6 right now.

Like I said, if Gilroy can keep up his recent play, I will change my tune on him. It looks like he may have finally figured out a role he can play adeptly at the NHL level, but I need to see it for more than 5 games to be sold. Ellerby might not be better than him right this minute, but I think he's still very raw and was poorly handled and Torts could do a lot with him. I only advocate for them because of the minimal price. If the price was a 3rd and a prospect, we wouldn't be having this conversation. With the price at a 5th, I think either would have been worth the gamble and could have paid off. The possible reward outweighs the risk and when you don't want to move roster pieces, those are the kinds of moves you make sometimes. If Ellerby took just one step forward for us, he would be well worth a 4th or 5th.

Says you and a bunch of HF armchair GMs. We're not selling. We have no reason to move Boyle for a pick. Boyle is the kind of player you want to ADD for your playoff run, which is why Gaustad got a 1st for a non-playoff team at the deadline. It would be idiotic to sell Boyle for a pick and if you think you're getting back a 1st AND a player, you can guarantee the player won't be that serviceable.

EDIT: I'm not even trying to be hostile about it. I'd agree with you if we were on the outside looking in at the deadline, but we're not going to be sellers. Just because a non-playoff team moved Gaustad for a late first last year doesn't mean we SHOULD do the same with Boyle. We want to compete this year. Boyle and Gaustad are very comparable players and there's a reason a team who felt they had a legitimate shot was willing to pay a first to ADD that kind of player. We've already got ours and he's a good lockerroom guy who knows the team. Moving him to have a first in 2013, who won't play in he NHL until 2016 or 2017 just doesn't make sense. In 2016 Brad Richards will be turning 36 Henrik will be turning 34. I know the site is called hockey's future, but really, there is no reason to move roster pieces for a 1st this year. We're in win-now mode.

Ellerby is 24 years old. Certainly not in his prime, but no longer someone we should be considering raw in his 5th season as a pro.

Boyle for SOB + 2nd '13

Anyone?

Or Chicago:

Clendening/Shaw/McNeil + pick?
I've done some groundwork in this area. They are hot for BB at the right price. Gives depth to their pivot. ? is price.

They have previously been willing, but less inclined to add Dylan Olsen, a former mid 20s 1st round pick but open to do so based on additional assets. With their very good start to date and a resurgence of their backliners, Olsen will not be given away, nor cheap, but he can be, IMO, more reasonably had.

Clendenning, last I looked, was higher valued D prospect for them.

I think
Boyle + Christian Thomas + Stu Bickel + Rangers 4th
for
Olsen + McNeil/or acceptable substitute + Pat Beach + Chicago 5th

is ballpark win-win.

it's mostly futures, but Olsen can compete immediately for the bottom pair, and atm our pivots would be
Richards
Stepan
Miller
Halpern

we move Bickel who is emergency 7th or 8th for them but fits as a 4th LW option and they want a graceful way to move Beach, who is a project but was drafted high so he must have at least a certain amount of skills or talent we can hope to unearth and recover.

Thomas is a good fit for Chitown in many ways but upgrading to McNeil or alternate is a plus for us as well...
