Because they stand still and can't pass worth a damn. They don't force the defense to move quickly or think on their feet. If you're going to stick with perimeter passing to try and slam home a backdoor pass or one-timer, you need to at least move the puck quickly and try to isolate defenders.

It has seemed to be the MO with McPhee, and this really highlights it.

As excruciating as it is to watch, Oates needs to hold the line and move forward with his preferred system.

GMGM needs to fired, but barring that, he needs to focus on building a roster that satisfies Oates's system and stay out of defining that system. He did his part in that regard by hiring Oates and now needs to let him do the job for which he was hired.

Gonna be a LOOOOONG 2 1/2 months.

I meant with regard to the trap. Trapping has nothing to do with the abject laziness you describe so well.

Not directed at you. I just find it amusing when the "trapping killed this team" conversation pops up.

Absolutely. I hope he has the balls to say no to McPhee.

This is exactly what he needs to do and hopefully will. But he is a pretty reactionary GM from what we've seen (when we are going good he hesitates pulling the trigger on making a move to put us over the top - Pronger for example....when we are going bad he will fire coaches, change styles etc.)

Easy explanation, IMO. They're way too static.

Don't know if that's on the coaches or the players (though I'd lean towards the latter).

Thanks to the second unit, who didn't forget how to skate once they entered the offensive zone.

Take Ovechkin, Green, and Backstrom off the top PP unit in favor of Kundratek, Carlson, and Wolski. Brouwer and Ribeiro can stay.

I'd swap Fehr for Brouwer if all he's going to do is launch wristers from the slot.

On the rare times that Green actually manages to get the shot to the net, Brouwer crashes it. Given that Carlson does a much better job walking the line and getting pucks on net from the top of the umbrella than Green, that skill should become more important.

#Caps' McPhee said Hillen could be out 6-8 more weeks. Orlov another month. No timeline on Laich.

Damn, was hoping to have Hillen back for the playoff push. He would make a huge difference.

Is there anyone that is surprised at any of george's sound bites today?

Rationally he's right.

Forsberg, Wilson, Kuznetsov (someday), a top 3 pick, lots of cap room and hopeful growth from the defense does mean they still have a decent window.

Actually Hillen would be a big boon to help the tankitude.

Yep. We should look towards 2014-2015 when will have all those guys. Kuznetsov says he's coming after Sochi. Forsberg next year. Wilson looked good in camp by all accounts did he not?

I'm starting to warm up to this the more I think of it.

From what I remember, albeit its a bit fuzzy because of the 2-8-1 record, I think they said that Wilson was tough to send down because he was earning a spot on the team and didn't at all look out of place while with the team.

Short term is the opposite of blowing things up so I dk what the **** he's talking about. Of course he intends to kick the can and hope for the best. The same lame, bottom line oriented credo we've come to expect.

Even if he feels differently, why in the world would he say otherwise? What benefit would there to be making statements like this....

I'm only buying what GMGM is selling if I see him unload some useless assets this year. If we are going to tank, why are we keeping MP, Hamerlik, Ward, Poti, Johansson....

If the season goes down the drain they need to clean roster of non-key personnel for futures and draft picks.

Poti

He was allegedly injured Tuesday, completed the game, practiced Wednesday, skated the morning skate and then decided he couldn't play.

I not sure why I find that amusing but I do.

Brooks on 106.7

Didn't want to talk about his groin. He wouldn't answer if he is getting paid.

I take that to mean the groin is fine and is not getting paid

Said he loves the Oates system. Says he is a mad scientist. Said the players need to get to the 'don't think" stage.

I am glad to hear he and I and a few others aren't writing off the season, and think debating George's next potential bust is a priority in February. You would think the late season surges from Bruce and Dale never happened.

IMO the only hope is for the SE to be as crappy as advertised. They're not going to catch up to 8th place with all interconference games at this point.

Yeah i think that we should talk about 3rd place as a more likely scenario than 8th place.

Ironic, isn't it?

That said, 3rd place here we come. Brooks was more optimistic than ever, believe it or not.

He said you can easily see the progress when reviewing the game.

I think even the fans see it, but most are still waving the white flag in a pipe dream over a single prospect that may play for us 2-3 years from now.

C'mon, it is not Dale. We are not turtling.
