Just got back from a week in Seattle - holy schnikies, if you love the hops, this is a great place to go - they grow them right nearby, and so the micro brews and brewpubs and breweries all have insanely fresh hoppy beer. The whole NW is like that, cuz some of the good beer i tried was from Oregon as well.

It is dark and gloomy there this time of year, but you got great coffee and beer to keep you going around the clock.

Agreed Bookman. The entire PacNW is the American mecca of craftbrews IMO. I'm envious I miss Seattle.
I don't remember if I posted awhile back touting the deliciousness of a brew I discovered during a two hour layover in Portland Airport on my way to visit the parents. Laurelwood Brewing Co's Mother Lode Golden Ale. They had their own bar there with a beautiful, and very cool bartender. $4.50 or something for a pint, which threw me off as I was expecting a $7-8 price range. Apparently there is some Oregon law airports can not jack up the prices of food and drink. Tastiest beer I ever had. Needless to say by the time I was boarding my flight I was pretty tatered. So the lessons to be taken from my not so concise anecdote:
1). Get drunk at PDX
2). If you are going to get beer drunk in between flights. Make sure you have an aisle seat. Thankfully I always do.
3). Be sure it's your cool drinking Father and not your sweet, but square Mother that picks you up at your final destination.

Got a $40 gift card to the Ale Jail for my birthday and I think I'm going to head over there tonight. I'm hoping I can contain myself and only spend $40.....

So Sam Adams has started brewing New Albion pale ale, which is pretty much the original microbrew, it stopped production in the early 80's. Having not been alive during that time, I never tried it. I bought a 6 pack of it today, and so far am not impressed. It tastes like an overly-ambitious lager. Anyone else tried it?

1st beer is almost always awful. It's an acquired taste.

That said, Hard Alcohol>Beer.

Don't drink crappy beer. "Light" beers taste awful. No Miller, Budweiser, Coors, Heineken, Corona, Busch, Natural Light, or High Life, or PBR (actually those last two aren't terrible, but aren't good).

Try these, in order (not all at once obviously):

1. Crispin or Strongbow - a cider, kind of like apple-flavored beer, very good. If you're a woman, you'll likely stop here.

2. Sunset Wheat, Blue Moon, or Shock Top - lighter wheat beer with citrus notes, serve with a slice of orange.

3. Honey Weiss or Stella - more "beer" flavored but still light, serve with a slice of lemon.

4. Newcastle - lighter brown ale, notice the nutty flavors and malt.

5. Summit EPA - good all-around pale ale, it's strong and bitter at first, but keep with it.

6. Guinness - gotta have it. It's dark and slightly bitter, but by now you've grown accustomed to those flavors. Like getting over the "burn" of alcohol or "tart" of wine.

From there, wherever you want to go. Furious, Hopslam, Bender, some of my favorites.

Yeah try A variety. I personally greatly preferred the darker beers (Surly Bender and Guinness were my faves) when I was first going out, everyone has different tastes.

Just opened a Surly Abrasive and I can smell the hops while it's sitting 5 feet away on the table next to me. Sign of a good beer.
