Barça and Real both looking really tired after wednesday's battle.

I'm just glad we gained an extra point on them, playing Valencia, while they were up against Granada.

On a side note: Ronaldo has now scored against every La Liga team - let's see Messi do that!
La Liga no longer matters for Real, I'll bet Manchester United are more bummed by this result than Real at this point. They can use all the distractions for Mourinho they can get.

Must be nice to be Lionel Messi. Signed a new contract extension worth a reported 45 million USD per year/33.5 million Euros/28.6 million pounds, which breaks down to 646,000 Euros or 550,000 pounds a week.

More interestingly, he refused that his release clause goes more expensive.

Yeah, but are the bolded figures per year? Seems awfully high, even for him.

Yeah, REALLY interesting. Must be pining for a move away. Maybe PSG's "project", especially since they just signed up Beckham.

Sorry nothing is bolded in your reply. The 45/33.5/28.6 is the yearly salary converted to each currency. Divide by 52 for weekly wage, no?

What is his current release clause? Must be well over 100 million if not 150. Someone could theoretically pay that one day but would Messi want to leave anyways? His release clause could be $1 but unless he agreed to leave it doesn't matter.

Sorry. Forgot that part. I'm not disputing your math, or even the salary figure. It was a legitimate question. Still seems really high. Take those figures, divide by two, the length of the extension, and then that seems more likely to me.

I think it's along the lines of 250 million, but I'm not positive. Anyway, as you say, he'd have to agree to the move. Never say never, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Even if he wanted to leave, that doesn't mean that he couldn't "force" a move at lower than the buyout clause. IMO buyout clauses are good, but they only protect againt a really agressive bid for a player. It's great to have in place if Madrid were to come calling, but if Messi wanted to go to say Inter I doubt the buyout clause does much to help unless the club were to dig in it's heels for the remainder of his contract. For me the importance of this deal is that it extends so he's tied to the club for five more years contractually which IMO means he'll be around for three more seasons minimum after this season.

Anyway, what I find more interesting is that moron Rosell's comment about how he'd like a certain Madrid player. At least he wasn't so stupid as to name the player. Still curious as to who he's referring to. I have a few players in mind who I think he might be referring to.

Was thinking about Bayern in fact. But hey, whatever makes your day...

Why would he refuse to do that if not for letting a (small) way out?

I doubt he'd go to Bayern or anywhere else. On top of that, there's this:

"I said it before - in Europe I'd like to end my career at Barca. I wouldn't consider moving to another European club. With that said, I'm not ruling out the possibility of ending my playing career in Argentina."

And he's said something along those lines before. IIRC his father has as well. He's been with the club since he was 13 and it's the club that paid for his medical bills. From what I can see there is a very strong bond there.

I don't know and I wouldn't blame him if that was his thought process, assuming the decision was his. I've seen bad situations at the club in the past and he may well have reason to leave some day. It still isn't that big a deal if his buyout is 250 million and considering the loyalty he's thus far demonstrated.

Oh I certainly wouldn't bet on him leaving. I think he stays with Barca for his entire career.
But the fact he insisted on his clause not being higher is intriguing.

The contract will supposedly guarantee him 15-16 million after taxes, similarly to the contract Ibra signed at PSG. Catalan taxes are the key to the high figures we've been hearing.

Just going off what was said just like the salary amount, 56% is how much he'd be losing to taxes.

Barcelona is just in cruise control. They're way too good.

Edit: and two minutes after I say that, they concede a goal. Not that it matters though.

to be honest, I'm not going to knock on Barca for it, almost all their players are Spaniards and came through La Masia, they developed their "machine", it's not their fault others haven't. It's also a very generational thing, these players didn't just grow out of trees. Messi, Iniesta, Xavi this is just a one in a lifetime combination probably. Although if you look at the Spanish youth NT who've won like pretty much every European competition the last decade, a lot of the players are from La Masia. Barca just seems to have developed a great working football philosophy from the ground up.
