When does Giordano become expendable?

Does Gio become expendable at all?

I know this is a bit early, but we've all noticed Brodie is progressing nicely and is due for a new contract. Brodie probably won't get a huge raise, but maybe he'll get a 2-3 year bridge contract for a chance to move up the the ~4mil price range.

Wideman is locked up, and Bouwmeester is the best defenseman is on the team.

At what point do the Flames consider moving Giordano to upgrade a position at forward?

When: Trade Deadline
Why: The Flames are out of a playoff spot, and starting a rebuild.
Probability: Low

When a team offers a young center like ROR or Couts. I would move him now for either Brodie is a better offensive d man and Widemen and Jbo are better overall then Gio.

It would have to be a good young player coming back. No point in making him available because our d has stepped it up, can use as many good dman as we can get, and his contract is beautiful.

I started a "Value of: Mark Giordano" thread on the Trades board and the pretty much every fan of each team would give up a 1st + prospect to land Gio. His has lots of value, atleast on HF. Funny cause he has the same value as Iginla on Hf, which is laughable.

But Stewie is right, you don't move him unless we are out of the playoffs. Moving him and Kipper alone could land us with 3 picks in the 1st round and some nice bluechip prospects, also letting us keep Iggy until he retires (which I'm on the fence about).

Not until the team gets another top-four defensemen to take his spot. I know, what a novelty, actually having four top four defensmen on the roster. How absurd.

Seriously though, unless the Flames are rebuilding and Giordano wants out, there's no reason to trade him. After Brodie, the Flames don't have a single prospect defensemen in the system that projects to be in the top-four anytime soon. Why create a massive hole on the blue line to fill what is at the moment, a small hole up front?

At the moment, yes. The team seems to be able to do okay with what they have. Would a legitimate number one centre be able to help? Of course, but a lot less if you have to gut other areas of the team just to get it done. Plus, Couturier isn't a number one centre right now, and O'Reilly doesn't project to be one ever.

There's two scenario's for a Giordano trade, right now and in a potential rebuild. Right now doesn't make any kind of sense. In a rebuild, it's more of a toss-up. You still need veterans in the lineup during a rebuild and Giordano wouldn't be a bad option for a captain of such a team. It really depends on what other teams would offer and whether or not Bouwmeester sticks around.

It's not to say that I would refuse to make that trade whatsoever. If Holmgren offered Couturier for Giordano straight up, Feaster would be nuts to refuse. But he would have to trade a forward or three for a legit top-four defensemen, unless he has to go ahead to blow it up. From a competitive standpoint, the Flames can't afford to lose a top-four defensemen for a centre still looking to find his way.

You trade Gio for a legit #1C any day of the week.

Only if I was approached by another team who was offering a #1 Center. I would think long and hard before making Giordano openly available in any other situation.

How about a list of three centres you'd trade Gio for if the situation arises? I want to see how each of us values him. Let's actually do more than that.

No obvious ones like Crosby, Malkin, Backstrom, etc. because that much is a given.

Mike Richards
David Krejci
Tomas Plekanec

I know Kings, Bruins, and Habs fans will be all like "NO WAI BRAH" (maybe even some of you) but that's to be expected. I'd trade Giordano for one of those three.

I trade him for Richards or Krejci in a second. Proven winners coming from championship teams. Plekanec has never really impressed me in any Habs game I've watched. Maybe I just haven't watched enough I dunno.

I actually don't think this is a crazy statement, 45% at faceoffs 9 points in 8 games.

I'd move Gio + extras for Ryan O'Reilly. O'Reilly might not "project as a #1 C" but he's future captain material and at least a strong, two-way #2 center. If he had signed with the Avs this summer, he probably would have been named captain over Landeskog.

The Avs/Flames have made some big trades in the past, but I wouldn't think the Avalanche would want to move a player like O'Reilly within the division.

This.

He's not a number one center, but he's filling the hole pretty well and seems to be getting more comfortable with the more games he plays. I don't think our center position is as horrible as people make it out to be. Considering a healthy line-up we got Tanguay, Backlund, Stajan, Jones. If we look at it without Tanguay however, it looks a little problematic.

I agree at the deadline and only if were out of it. I would make it known he was available and drive up the market for him.

if we rebuild (which i think we kinda are, just not in a tanking way) he will be there.

Glencross
Giordano
Cervenka

would likely stay if we WERE going to blow it up while

Comeau
Bouwmeester
Cammalleri
Jackman
Stempniak
Butler
etc...

would be available

Baertschi - Jankowski - Draftee
Cervenka -Backlund - Draftee
Glencross - Draftee - Gordon
Ferland - Bouma - UFA/Draftee

Draftee - Draftee
Brodie - Wotherspoon
Giordano - Seiloff

Ramo/Brossiot
Brossiot/ramo

lol 5-7 years from now (by the looks of it we might get jones, barkov, MacKinnon, etc)

If we're assuming that the Flames want to be competitive, why would you break up a solid top 4? A player becomes expendable when there's a decent replacement for him, and last I checked the Flames have exactly four top-4 dmen. Get rid of Gio and there's a roster hole.

I think if we out of it, Kipper, Gio, Iginla, and Stemps would yield the best results without hurting us long term. I'm sure Iginla would come back in the offseason. Sarich, Babs, Comeau, and Smith/Butler could pick is some light future assets as well.

But until then there's no point in parting with our best guys

Exactly this. Brodie playing well shouldn't mean in anyway Giordano is now available. It doesn't make sense. Not to mention Giordano brings an element of physicality to the top four that none of Brodie, Bouwmeester and Wideman can match.

Giordano's the kind of guy you would want to keep in a rebuild. Trading away all the serviceable veterans is a really bad idea, that is unless, you want to establish a culture of losing like the Oilers are on the verge of doing.

Plus, Bouwmeester's a UFA after next season. There's no guarantee he re-signs, especially if the Flames miss the playoffs this season and next, and he decides that he doesn't want to go down in history as the player who never makes the post-season.
