I am not going to agree with the premise that all star game appearances are a meaningful measure of anything. Also I think it is more difficult to be 'a star' as a defenseman as you don't have the obvious goals and points to point to. I mean how many star defensemen are there in the league regardless of where they were picked?

So looking at all the first five picks from '00-'09 how many are currently 'stars?'

1 NY Islanders John Tavares
2 Tampa Bay Victor Hedman
3 Colorado Matt Duchene
4 Atlanta Evander Kane
5 Los Angeles Brayden Schenn

1 Tampa Bay Steven Stamkos
2 Los Angeles Drew Doughty
3 Atlanta Zach Bogosian
4 St. Louis Alex Pietrangelo
5 Toronto Luke Schenn

1 Chicago Patrick Kane
2 Philadelphia James Van Riemsdyk
3 Phoenix Kyle Turris
4 Los Angeles Thomas Hickey
5 Washington Karl Alzner

1 St. Louis Erik Johnson
2 Pittsburgh Jordan Staal
3 Chicago Jonathan Toews
4 Washington Nicklas Backstrom
5 Boston Phil Kessel

1 Pittsburgh Sidney Crosby
2 Anaheim Bobby Ryan
3 Carolina Jack Johnson
4 Minnesota Benoit Pouliot
5 Montreal Carey Price

1 Washington Alexander Ovechkin
2 Pittsburgh Evgeni Malkin
3 Chicago Cam Barker
4 Carolina Andrew Ladd
5 Phoenix Blake Wheeler

1 Pittsburgh Marc-Andre Fleury
2 Carolina Eric Staal
3 Florida Nathan Horton
4 Columbus Nikolai Zherdev
5 Buffalo Thomas Vanek

1 Columbus Rick Nash
2 Atlanta Kari Lehtonen
3 Florida Jay Bouwmeester
4 Philadelphia Joni Pitkanen
5 Pittsburgh Ryan Whitney

1 Atlanta Ilya Kovalchuk
2 Ottawa Jason Spezza
3 Tampa Bay Alexandr Svitov
4 Florida Stephen Weiss
5 Anaheim Stanislav Chistov

1 NY Islanders Rick DiPietro
2 Atlanta Dany Heatley
3 Minnesota Marian Gaborik
4 Columbus Rostislav Klesla
5 NY Islanders Raffi Torres

I counted 24 guys I'd classify as stars, so basically half of them.

I am highly impressed by Valeri Nichushkin, not that I prefer Russians to anybody else in the draft, but I've been video scouting (Craig Button top 10 prospects) and this guy would go in as #1 for me. Watch the highlights and you may be impressed. He may be the most NHL ready player besides his inability to speak English of course. I could compare him to NHL player Evgeni Malkin- this is not a wrong comparison in the slightest imo.

Highlight video scouting is a terrible way to do it. That video shows very little of what he does away from the puck and almost play there is the same situation of him outtalenting other junior players. I mean even Stanislav Galiev had a highlight video that fooled people into thinking he was a lock for a top-6 spot this season, never mind he isn't even good enough to do that in Hershey.

Galiev = third round pick, fail of a pick but I agree.

Really hoping if we can't get another top-10 pick, we're able to get into a position to draft Lazar.

His somewhat limited role on an overager stacked team has depressed the offensive numbers a bit, but he's a natural center with good hockey sense, nice scoring instincts, good wheels, grit and plays the game hard all over the ice.

I don't think we'll draft outside the top 6.

Right, hence my desire to get another top-10 pick. I guess I wasn't clear.

My ideal scenario is to get #1 or #2 to get Mackinnon, then acquire another top-10 pick to get Drouin. It that's not possible, I'd like to get another first to draft Lazar.

Got it. Even though it's depressing to watch right now it really would be exciting to see forwards like Ovechkin, Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Forsberg and MacKinnon on our scoring lines and power play. Plus you never know how Wilson might pan out.

My draft strategy would be MacKinnon/Barkov, then trade to the 20th pick to get, say, Hagg or other strong D and then Hartman early in the second round.

I bet Hartman is a draft-day riser and goes in the 20s, a la Laughton,

According to this site, the Caps currently stand a 65% risk/chance of finishing as a bottom-3 seed.

I like the fact that both Barkov and Lindholm has been playing against grown men. So I wouldn't mind trading down from 1st OA to 3rd OA for the right price.

This is probably what will happen. The team has too much talent to be where it is. A turnaround is going to happen sadly for those wanting the high picks.

My pipe dream right now is trading from 1 to 3 with a team who is in love with one of the top two guys, then packaging the extra first we got with the first we got for Ribiero and moving into the top 6 again. Two top 6 picks!

Hey, it's all I got right now.
