I find him to be exceptionally clueless. I just read the article and neither he nor Lebrun come across as very knowledgable. Guys like Malone and Matt Carle making the U.S. team? I also love how they can't resist getting in digs about how the U.S. depth can't match Canada's.

I don't usually like saying stuff like this because it's overused, but he clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. I mean all you had to do was pay attention to the world juniors.

I'd argue being the fourth-highest scorer from 10-11 to now puts Pominville in a good spot offensively. More points and better ppg than Parise, Ryan, Kesler, MaxPac, Callahan, etc. One point fewer than Pavelski in the same amount of games. Add this to his defensive and PK success. If it's up to him vs. Stastny it's hardly a tough decision.

you need to find room for this guy and I agree I am not sure where he would fit in. if he keeps this up he makes this team, but dont be surprised if it is more of a 13th forward and specialty unit role...

I get that he plays a bigger need. To be clear I don't want Yandle, how could I endorse Leddy? They have offensive options that run better than Leddy and he just isn't there in the complete game aspect yet. He could make a case in 2018, I just don't see it this soon. Jack Johnson for me is a shoe-in because of his relationship with USA hockey, pretty much locks the left side of the ice with JMFJ, McDonagh, and Suter.
Really what would be nice is if Bogosian comes back and plays just like he did last year. At that point I take him over Carlson, but I want a PK guy that can skate. If not I would even bring a guy like Scuderi who can play both sides. I think Erik Johnson has improved a lot and Shattenkirk should be there. That is two right handed D, bring Big Buff as the PP specialist 7th man or Fowler. That is just how I see it and the roles when I think of it but it is just my opinion. Also as stated previously Seth Jones should be invited to the summer camp and he also becomes a decent right side option if he plays his way onto the team, along Justin Faulk both those guys are coming on in a hurry as right handed options.

As posted already while everyone likes Brown - Backes - Callahan for obvious reasons. I split them up for better balance in the bottom six. I put Pominville on the third line with Backes and Patches, two heavy net guys that shoot with a playmaker. The put Brown - Pavelski - Callahan together as a heavy line that grinds and shoots plus plays with a lot of speed. I think it provides more jam instead of the one heavy line. We will see what they do, but Pominville deserves to be on this team, he is solid in a depth role and provides really good offensive punch while being responsible.

I'd take Pominville over Oshie or JVR. Team USA has enough 2-way wingers, can't leave off probably the best passer on the team.
Not necessarily a "young" team, but not a ton of grizzled vets, like Langenbrunner. Who is captain material out of the bunch? Brown, Backes, Callahan only NHL captains.
Pominville definitely gets high consideration. However, the best passer will be Kane regardless of whoever else is on the team.

McDonagh is not even the 7th defenseman, the ****? Byfuglien, Justin Faulk, and Brooks Orpik make it over him? Don't know enough about Shattenkirk to say anything. That's pretty ridiculous and I know that's not your projection. If this were team Canada, leaving off McDonagh would be the right move, team USA that would be ridiculous.

The fact that neither Burnside, Lebrun, or their editors seem to know that Couturier can only play for Canada is pathetic, especially since multiple people on twitter and in the comments have tried to correct them. My expectations are so low for ESPN as they've become the Fox News of sports but I do understand that so many casual fans or potential fans look to them for their hockey coverage and they're doing the sport no favors with such poor knowledge.

- The forward group is pretty straight forward in my mind. The need to take veteran, character players like Drury and Langenbrunner isn't there anymore. That will leave aging vets like Malone out of contention for this squad. There's some young forward talent to follow like Galchenyuk, Miller, Palmieri, Kreider, Saad, etc. but they'd have to really stand out offensively to be in play. Pominville will have to keep his hot hand going for awhile and play in the WC if he's available to endear himself to Burke and co. again. Stastny, Pominville, and Oshie are the only forwards on my team I don't consider locks at this point. I'm hopeful Colin Wilson can keep going as he's looked great so far this year and that Derek Stepan can turn it up to increase the competition at center. Others I considered: Blake Wheeler, James Van Riemsdyk, Colin Wilson, Derek Stepan, Erik Cole.
- The defense is going to be a real crap shoot. Suter and McDonagh are my only absolute locks and I think JJ is a less safe lock as well. Justin Faulk is already a top pairing d-man at 20 and it's only a matter of time before he's a superstar - he's already good enough to make this team. I'm not sure they need a riverboat gambler in Byfuglien but I think his shot, versatility, and size will intrigue USA staff. I'll put him there now but there's going to be a lot of challengers for his spot. I'm most interested to see how Bogosian plays when he returns. He's still so young and made HUGE strides in his game last year. If he keeps that up, watch out. I think any of the d-men I list here could be there but Erik Johnson is the one guy on the hot seat for me. Being a good d-man in 2010 was enough but it won't be in 2014. He needs to turn the corner now. Others I considered: Kevin Shattenkirk, Matt Carle, Paul Martin, Zach Bogosian, John Carlson, Erik Johnson, Cam Fowler.
- Five goalies in play with Quick, Miller, Anderson, Schneider, and Howard. Anderson is playing great but unless both Miller and Quick are really struggling in 2014 I'd suspect they'll look to Schneider (assuming he's a starter and playing well) for the third spot since he's younger. Either way, it's a good problem to have.

Carlson has stepped up to another level during the playoffs and always has. I think he still makes the team.

Espn does some decent hockey features. It's not completely worthless. Although I will say that I'd stopped really taking burnside seriously for awhile now. This just confirmed he's completely clueless. I still respect Lebrun. I don't know if he read burnside's article or not so ill give him the benefit of the doubt. Makes me wonder about these guys qualifications sometimes though.

Meh, he doesn't say anything to interesting, just that his reporting is generally accurate and he doesn't stand on his soap box too often and talk about stuff that he clearly isn't full comprehending like Burnside.
