Kent Simpson has got his SV% above .900 in the ECHL (.901). It was around .885 the last time I checked.
I don't think Simpson's going to be a good starting goaltender in the NHL, but he could be a quality back-up. He just needs time. He's big, athletic and from the sounds of it technically sound.
I never thought much of Simpson. I think NHL back-up is a stretch, I think he is a tweener/ 3rd goalie, someone who could fill in in the NHL if a goalie goes down but probably won't be in the NHL on a daily basis.
He's one point away from tying Joe Pavelski's USHL career points total, and a few goals/assists away from being top 10 all-time in Waterloo's history, but his opportunities to do both have been delayed six weeks due to breaking his arm.
Like I've said it before, I'm trying not to think too much of him until I see him play at Notre Dame next year, but it seems like every time I read about this guy, I come away even more impressed. I heard him called a great dark horse pick a lot when he was drafted, and it's really starting to look that way.
Phillip Danault and the Wildcats are going to be facing off against Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin and the Mooseheads tonight on Sportsnet Friday Night Hockey. Game starts at 7:00 or 7:30 (not sure which). Should be a very good game.
Last night Kent Simpson stopped 32 of 33 for a 2-1 win. Continues to stay hot and it is really nice to see. He was absolutely brutal for the 10-15 games and it was really annoying because Mrazek and the other guy Pierce were badly outplaying him and I was afraid he would continue to not even get a 50/50 split with Pierce. But now Pierce is gone and he is sharing time with Spratt who has yet to get a start...but Simpson hasn't given him a chance because of how well he has played.
A couple weeks ago Simpson had like a .887 SV%, but now his statline:
13-9-3, 2.45 GAA, .905 SV%
Nothing special, but you have to consider where it was before. I hope he continue to build on this hot streak and maybe something has clicked for him. If Simpson or Carruth can both improve then maybe we have a couple good goalie prospects. Remember, Crawford and Niemi didn't really get it all together until they were 25/26 years old. Simpson and Carruth are just 20 and 21 years old respectively so they can hopefully keep getting better in the ECHL/AHL. It would be nice to have a couple good goalie prospects on Rockford to help them win some games and maybe even get into the playoffs(well, that might be too much wishful thinking).
Carruth is second in save% behind Tristan Jarry. Jarry is draft eligible this year and replaced Fucale, slotted at #10 by Button in his latest rankings where Fucale gave up 3 goals at the HH top prospects game.
I remember HF50 saying pretty early in the season that he loved Tristan Jarry and preferred him over Fucale. Interesting to see Jarry rising and Fucale being questioned.
If Jarry's available after our first pick, grab him and don't think twice. We need more promising goalie prospects.
Outside of Simpson, Stan has only taken goalies in the 7th round. He'll probably have to break that habit to get Jarry, but you never know. Last May you would've been crazy to think Brandon Whitney would still be around in the 7th.
