Flyers Re-Sign Antero Niittymaki

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have re-signed 6’0”, 195-pound goaltender Antero Niittymaki (AN-tehr-oh NEE-too-mah-kee) to a new one-year contract, according to club General Manager Bob Clarke. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

"Antero Niittymaki has proven that he is a terrific, young goaltender,” said Clarke in making the announcement. “Last year at the Olympics, he confirmed to everybody the high level of goaltending that he can play and we believe that he is going to play like that this upcoming season."

Niittymaki, 26, posted a 23-15-6 record, 2.97 goals-against average (GAA) and .895 save percentage in 46 regular season games for the Flyers last season. He was tied for third among rookie NHL goaltenders in wins with 23. His 23 wins were the most by a Flyers rookie goaltender since Ron Hextall won 37 games during the 1986-87 season. Niittymaki also won a Silver Medal as a member of the Finnish National Team at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. He posted a 5-1-0 record, 1.34 GAA, .951 save percentage and three shutouts in six games for Finland and was named to the Media All-Star Team, Best Goalie and Olympic Tournament MVP.

that's what i would want if i was Nitty... tough to argue for a giant raise after last year, but if he can win the starting job (his thought process, i'm sure) and then go on a playoff run, he'll be lined up to get a good deal.

Do Flyer fans expect him to be the #1 next season?

He is 26 now, and I believe the age for free agency will be going down to 29 next year (I could be wrong), but even if its going down to 28 he still wont make it. Plus, he's a long way off from being able to make it as a UFA on the number of seasons played (I believe its something like 8 seasons to become a UFA).

I'm quite sure it's 28, so no worries.

A one year deal will probably benefit Frank so it better be cheap.

Nah I'd definitely take Samsonov over Gagne any day. Not saying I don't want Gagne back.

And since I had heard reports that Nitty wanted out of Philly, this make me happy that he'll at least be playing next year.

God knows where I can find that online again. I had read something online though, I honestly can't remember where, happened right around the conference finals. Anyways, water under the bridge. Good he's back. Hopefully he'll get the starting spot like he deserves. Kinda annoys me that Clarke mentioned the Olympics when they shouldn't have benched him coming off of there in the first place. Like I said before, never bench a hot goalie.......

I think i remember him being either sick with the flu or seriously burnt out as for why he didnt play right afterwards, while esche had some time to rest.

Im glad his was signed, hopfully for cheap this year, so he can go out there and earn his money. I would like to see him as the clear cut number one and im thinking esche and zeuz (pending primeaus situation) both get moved mid season-ish next year after some questions are answered.

we're not at 41 million... the 6 million dollar "UFA budget" was based off the idea of signing all of our RFAs. we still have plenty of room.

Thank you for clearing that up, that's one thing that always annoyed me. That makes sense at least.

My bet is that he's confusing "I'm not coming back to Philadelphia from the WC's for surgery" with "I'm never coming back to Philadelphia".
