Potential Washington Sell-Off

Here's a few guys who would be in play at the trade deadline or mid-season.

Mike Ribeiro (UFA)

Roman Hamrlik (UFA)

Tom Poti (UFA)

Joel Ward (3 years left at $3 per)

John Erskine (UFA)

Ribeiro and Ward are performing at high levels for the Caps despite their horrid start. The three UFA defensemen seem likely to be gone. Hamrlik at his age is unlikely to be signed, Erskine and Poti don't really have a place on the roster with Alzner, Orlov, Carlson, and Green being fixtures. Jeff Schultz is about as untradeable as they get and I expect Kundratek to be the 6th defenseman unless the Caps acquire someone else or they let a rookie get a few games in.

McPhee already said he's not going to blow up the team. Backstrom isn't going anywhere unless you offer absolutely stupid overpayment.

Brouwer could be in play too. Laich is a maybe, but the return would have to be insanely good. I mean, really really good.

He's probably worth more if he's packaged with say a Ribeiro

if this is the "untouchable" core, caps aren't ever getting out of this cycle

I dont know, sounds like Keeping Ovechkin/Backstrom is the good idea. And rebuild on the fly.

Get a couple extra 2nd round picks for UFA's.

Just like the TB Lightning did in getting Stamkos to ADD to Lecavalier and St.Louis. They would not have a good team right now if they traded off either of those 2 players

Ribeiro is a free agent next year right? They may as well dump him at the deadline. I don't see them trading anyone else except chimera. All of their decent players are on long bad contracts

Agreed. Trading Ovechkin and Backstrom would backfire pretty quickly and they would never get fair value. This is not video game.

They need to bolster their top 6 with talent again, add some good defenseman via trades/free agency and maybe a veteran goaltender to carry the load while Holtby develops. If he's not the guy, then give Grubauer a chance in the near future.

Guys like Hendricks, Beagle, Brouwer, Ward and Chimera would be helpful for any playoff contender out there.

Montreal depending on where they are in the playoff race come deadline, they will be needing to look at getting 1 or 2 big bodied dmen.

1 more big forward could help as well.

Chimera
Erskine
Poti

Ribiero interests me to a certain degree, but dont know if he could end up being a distraction coming back to Montreal and the way the media would praise him and such.

Let's just play this out:

2013/14:
Forsberg -Backstrom - Brouwer
Ovechkin - MacKinnon -
Laich -

Green - Alzner
Carlson -
Orlov -

Holtby

2014/15
Forsberg - Backstrom - Brouwer
Ovechkin - Mackinnon - Kuznetsov
Laich
Wilson

Green - Alzner
Carlson
Orlov - Schilling
Wey

Holtby

Looks like a decent core to me to build around

I would rather go for Ward.
So how about Kristo/Moen/Weber for Erskine/Ward?

Don't even bother. Ovechkin, Backstrom, Forsberg, Alzner, Wilson and Kuznetsov are not going anywhere. That's just silly.

The young guys that might be in play are Johansson, Galiev, Neuvirth and Perreault.

Orlov, Barber and Carlson are pretty remote possibilities if the offer is good enough.

I am. And I'm saying that you shouldn't even bother to answer guys that think the Caps are selling #8, #19, #27 etc.

It's simply unrealistic, I'm with you here.

Ovie is the franchise, for better or worse. What the fans think about him won't matter much for Leonsis.

What do you want from Minnesota for Green or less likely Alzner? Gilbert, 1st rounder, Heatley and Setoguchi are likely pieces. Coyle could go too.

Setoguchi+Gilbert+1st+Larsson for Alzner+Hamrlik?

The Blues need a top 2 line center, what's the price for Ribiero?
I'd prefer to make a deal strictly on futures for him if you'd go for that.

This.

They will never get "fair value" back.
Whoever gets the best player in the deal wins. So Wash CANT win this trade.
Basically he is a CAP forever, best to rebuild around him, he is still young. This is not Calgary
