If you could choose a number to retire?

If the Bruins one day gave the fans the choice of a number of a player that is not retired as of now who would you recommend. I have a couple in mind. Retire #1 twice for both Tiny Thompson and Frank Brimsek or Rick Middleton.

Nifty is a good choice, but what about Cheevers or Cashman?

Those are also good options. There are a number of Bruins who would be in consideration.

How far into the future would this day be? If it were in like 15 years, and the #37 hasn't gone up into the rafters, that'd be the one.

I'm not old enough to have seen too many of the guys that will be listed here, but the first name/number that came to mind for me was Adam Oates/#12. He was only here for 5 or 6 seasons, but his best seasons, at least statistically, were in Boston, and the Neely/Oates combo was pretty lethal.

As a Bruins fan who read about history I couldnt believe Tiny Thompson wasn't retired. It's probably to late to retire his # now though... I kinda wish Boston honoured #'s instead of retiring them though.

Number 1. Did any of you know that the Bruins don't have a single retired number for a goalie?

Tim Thomas could have had his number retired one day if he hadn't flaked out on the team, last year.

No Cheevers, either? Hmm...

It's not too surprising, simply because 95% of goalies wear one of 4 numbers. #1, #30, #31, or #35. The occasional #29 or #33, and then rare numbers such as #39 or #40. Retiring a goalie number leaves you with a limited number of goalie numbers. Not that teams carry many goalies, but I think that is why teams are hesitant to retire goalie numbers. It might not be the sole reason, but I bet it plays a part.

Goalies? Thomas is ahead of the other goalies IMO. Not sure about Cheevers, of course the WHA hurts him since he left us for it. Brimsek and Thompson don't think so goalies were pretty replaceable back then.

Skaters? Cowley, Flamman, Park, Middleton, Cashman, Dumart are old timers deserving real thought about it. Oates and I guess Thornton for more recent guys (Joe shouldn't really be mentioned with the other legends but he's the most recent player not on the roster you could mention.)

In order of who deserves it most:

1 Thomas
2 Cowley
3 Middleton
4 Cashman
5 Park
6 Flamman
7 Cheevers
8 Oates
9 Dumart
.
.
.
10 Thornton

I don't think the Hodges/Marcottes/McNabs deserve any real consideration. Maybe a little bit for another franchise but not us.

12 Adam Oates, 30 Tim Thomas (I consider him to be retired)

Way down the road Bergeron 37 and Chara 33.

#30. Thomas deserves it....he is a Boston legend as far as I am concerned. All that personal **** does not matter, the guy was THE BEST goalie I have ever seen. That includes Roy.

I never thought about the 'goalie number' aspect of it. I know the NHL doesn't have a rule like the NFL where certain positions MUST wear certain numbers...

Anyway... someone else mentioned Cheevers and his jump to the WHA possibly being a factor... The Bruins DID bring him back as a player, and he WAS the coach for a while (a pretty fair coach, I'm told). He's also a Hall of Famer. Come to think of it... the Bruins don't have ANY retired numbers for WHA guys (Sanderson, though not sure his 16 should be retired).

Also, I agree with the poster that said 37 and 33 will likely go up one day. There are other players who have the talent (Seguin, Hamilton, and Rask) to have Hall of Fame careers if they live up to their potential and the hype.

I don't think any number should be retired. What number a player wears is important to them (that's why you see 33, 44). Instead of the number retire the sweater and hang tht in the rafters. That way the youngster can get the number he has always worn. If I was a player I would request that.........and if I was a retired player who's number was retired, I'd request it be put back into circulation.

I sure hope you mean Shawn Thornton for #10, and not that other
Thornton that was here.

Got no ill will towards Joe, but there is no reason why he should be retired.

Why they've never retired a GK's number is beyond me.

I always though it would be a classy move to retire Normand Leveille's #19.
