Someone said its 900K so they are good but I have 375K in my mind.

Rangerboy is good at confirming these things
It's $900k and he's already in the minors not counting towards the cap, so I don't know why next year would be any different.

Just to clarify, it's not always $900k. It's the minimum salary + $375k. When the minimum salary goes up, that number would go up.

Next year he's on a one-way is why the question came.

But yeah, he won't count as his NHL salary is under 925K.

Ah, sorry about that. I didn't notice it was a one-way for next year.

Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Anton Stralman ($1.700m)

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000
CAP PAYROLL: $64,770,250
BONUSES: $2,050,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $1,579,750
  • Could we qualify Michael Sauer and put him on LTIR? Is there any point to this?

CT Roster next year
Forwards
Haley - Newbury - one of Palmieri/Ferriero
Hrivik - Lindberg - Fast
St Croix - Jean - Thomas
Bourque - Yogan - Wilson
maybe add a new AHL vet Scrub and a goon up front

Defense
XX - Noreau
XX - Parlett
Klassen - XX
Niemi ?

Goalies
Talbot
XX (Stacjer)??
  • We need capable defenders injected into the pipeline at Hartford.
  • Myles Bell & Andrej Sustr would be interesting acquisitions as new defenders in Hartford.
  • Maybe look at the Swiss guy Joel Vermin? Or the UFA Petr Straka? Lots of more alternatives as well.
  • Plus a top pairing minor league vet D and ev a college goalie.
  • College prospects (Nieves, Skjei, Fogarty) stay in NCAA school another year, at least.
  • McColgan to ECHL? Ceresnak - does he get a deal??

There will be lots of changes and deviations (hopefully for the better) to this of course - but this looks OK IMO...

Rick Nash ($7.800m) / Brad Richards ($6.667m) / Marian Gaborik ($7.500m)

Stu Bickel ($0.750m)

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m)
Martin Biron ($1.300m)

I figure this as well. Most of the team stays together.......they may just go with one spare and call up when needed so Bickel would be the spare.............I read Mashinter is a UFA so who knows if he resigns.............Ferrerio, Palmieri are RFA so they will stick around likely plus Fast, Lindberg will be options. Hrivik , Thomas may get a shot

They don't need to move Gaborik. They have the space to sign RFA's but cant add more salary to next yr so it's rentals if they want to add this yr for a playoff run

If they get guys to commit to bridge deals they can keep the team together next season.

The offseason after that becomes extremely complicated. I wouldn't want to be Sather having to convince 4 of the team's best and longest tenured top players in Lundqvist, Gaborik, Girardi and Callahan to consider a paycut.

Couldn't the cap go up for 14-15 though? Isn't it just set at $64 for next year?

Still will be tight though, I agree.

The upper limit can't drop below $64.3M.

The Rangers should trade Gaborik this summer. Darren Dreger was discussing Phil Kessel earlier this week. Kessel will also be a group III next summer. Dreger said the asking price will be at least a top 6 forward or top 4 D plus a top pick. The other 3 group III's in 2014 are must signs. Trade Gaborik.

A young top 6 forward,1st round pick or top prospect plus another asset.

It's funny that the low budget teams wanted to punish the high-paying teams with a low cap number next season and that cap advantage recapture on those retirement contratcs. And now it's actually salary floor circumvention that is back first after the lockout...

I don't know how breaking Gaborik down into pieces after acquiring a lesser player in Nash for an assortment of somewhat similar pieces to what RB suggested puts us at all towards our goal of winning the cup. I'm really surprised to see it brought up in a time when we're supposed to be trying to win.

We shouldn't break apart a player, especially with picks as a key part of it unless we legitimately have to.

Agree, but would like to see the deal first though.

Mr Sather - errrr - I mean RB - What did you have in mind?

The Rangers have 3 right wingers. All three prefer the right side.

Win? How do all of the current pieces fit with so many players up for new contracts within the next 16-17 months? Even if the Rangers are able to re-sign Gaborik, should do they give another big contract? He won't come cheap. The cap will be $64.3M next season. Lundqvist,Nash,Richards and Gaborik will make up 45% of the $64.3M. Top heavy roster.

If we were to buyout Richards before 2014 would we be able to re-negotiate a new contract as a free agent with him or would he not be allowed to sign with us after a buyout?

I believe you are prohibited from signing the player for one year.

(It may be that you are prohibited from acquiring the player for one year in order to prevent back room dealings where a guy gets bought out, signs with another team and then immediately gets dealt back to his original team.)

Cap Management

I hope our team doesn't get gutted in the summer of 2014.

Fairly certain to leave:

1. Richards
2. Gaborik
3. Asham
4. Haley
5. Pyatt
6. Bickel
7. Biron

May leave:

1. Boyle
2. Stralman
3. Powe

Terrible if they leave:

1. Lundqvist
2. Girardi
3. Callahan

This is the very preliminary roster we might see in 2014-15 assuming we neither sign nor lose any stars. I put in Haley and Eminger as our #13 and #7, but it could be any other cheap replacement. The cap hit overall came out to $53. I am certain that due to revenue increase, the cap in 2014-15 will be over $70, which would mean we will be able to splurge to sign or trade for a star that another team cannot afford. But below is what would happen if we didn't sign any stars and didn't lose any of our own.

FORWARDS
Carl Hagelin ($2.500m) / Derek Stepan ($2.500m) / Rick Nash ($7.800m)
Chris Kreider ($1.325m) / J.T. Miller ($1.244m) / Ryan Callahan ($6.000m)
Marek Hrivik ($0.685m) / Oscar Lindberg ($0.760m) / Jesper Fasth ($0.900m)
Andrew Yogan ($0.800m) / Brian Boyle ($1.700m) / Darroll Powe ($1.500m)
Micheal Haley ($0.600m) /

DEFENSEMEN
Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Dan Girardi ($3.325m)
Ryan McDonagh ($3.500m) / Anton Stralman ($1.700m)
Michael Del Zotto ($2.550m) / Dylan McIlrath ($1.295m)
Steve Eminger ($0.750m) /

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($7.775m)
Cameron Talbot ($0.563m)

We can sign a star center and a star winger (Gaborik?) instead of Boyle and Powe, and still wind up with about $6 to spend, enough for another superstar.

I really think they need to think long and hard before giving Girardi and Callahan lucrative, long-term deals. Callahan will be 29, Girardi 30. Players like them don't tend to last too long into their 30s.

I think you have to sign them. They are the heart and soul of the team. You can't show the young kids that if they work hard and sacrifice their bodies, they will be punished with bad contracts very early in their career when perimeter players are getting massive contracts.

Also, if we don't resign Cally and Girardi, we might as well tell Lundqvist that he's signing up to never win the Cup. It would be a clear sign that the team is not looking to win now.

With over $20 in cap space after re-signing Lundqvist, Girardi and Cally, the team can sign or acquire a whole first line, if we can ever find three stars to sign. There's no reason not to re-sign Girardi and Callahan for another few years. Maybe 2 years for Girardi and 3 years for Cally. We have enough rookies coming up that we'll be able to keep well under the cap.

No way Richards would "leave." He would either be amnestied or traded. He's under contract until 2020, and is getting paid way more than he should. No way he leaves.

I am not sold on Hrivik, he had one good playoff run and good beginning to this season. We need to sign a veteran 3rd line winger to play with the kids.
As much as I love how Stralman turned out, we do need that top 4 RH D with a good shot.
If we will not sign Gaborik, I'd rather deal with for the above mentioned needs.
I agree on Giradi, his next contract should be limited in terms.

I think you'd have a tough time signing those two to such short term deals as UFAs.

By the way, you can bet on signing another star, this team's window is open as long as Nash and Hank are elite, 4 years at the max?
