Please forward a list over to me, I don't have a pick for awhile, make sure there are enough players on it and I will take the next available off your list. Thanks.

I've updated the draft clock on the front page. Use that as a guide and feel free to continue the draft based on that timer if any picks are missed and I am not around.

The New York Giants select OF 'Sliding' Billy Hamilton.

  • Inducted into Hall of Fame in 1961
  • 2-time NL batting champion
  • Career .344 average - 7th all-time
  • Led NL in OBP 5 times
  • Career .455 OBP - 4th all-time
  • Led league in stolen bases 5 times
  • 914 career stolen bases - 3rd all-time
  • Led NL in runs scored 4 times
  • 2,164 career runs scored - 27th all-time
  • Top 10 in WAR (position players) 1890-1898, 1900

Hamilton will make for an ideal leadoff hitter.

Bagwell won the 1991 ROY, the 1994 MVP, and made 4 all-star games. He was also reliable defensively, picking up a gold glove award in '94 (although that tells you far less than just watching him navigate the astroturf did.)

Bagwell's career WAR of 76.7 ranks 38th all-time among hitters. And, for the Bill James fans out there, he ranks Bagwell as the 4th best first baseman of all-time.

Very happy with this pick.
I'm also pretty sure he's the only 1B to ever have a 30/30 season and he had 2 of them.

Are you sure your Helton numbers are correct? I see him listed on Baseball-Reference as having a .964 career OPS.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Among active players with at least 4,000 at bats, Helton is currently: third in batting average (.323) to Albert Pujols (.333), and Ichiro Suzuki (.333), first (10th all-time) in on-base percentage (.428), fourth (13th all-time) in slugging percentage [(.571), behind Pujols (.628), Manny Ramírez (.594), and Alex Rodriguez (.576)] and third (10th all-time) in on-base plus slugging [(0.9933), behind Pujols (1.0571) and Ramírez (1.0035)].

Was gonna include the condition that he's forbidden from any champagne should Brooklyn win this thing, but figured that would be mean

Yet another reason why trusting Wikipedia is an iffy proposition at best. They didn't get Manny or Pujols' OPS totals correct either. Heh.

Wikipedia isn't the best source for this sort of info.

Oh no, the pick is fine. I was just curious as to how that sort of discrepancy could have come about.

Well since that same source is saying ManRam is active, I assume it hasn't been updated for a while. Helton at one point probably did have a .9933 OPS, but not no more. Probably becasue he hasn't been good over the last 5 years or so.

The St. Louis Browns select catcher Bill Dickey

Quote:
As famed sportswriter Dan Daniel once said, "Bill Dickey isn't just a catcher, he's a ballclub." A key performer for the Yankees on eight American League pennant-winners and seven World Series champions, the expert handler of pitchers with the deadly accurate throwing arm was also a clutch hitter, batting over .300 in 10 of his first 11 full seasons. Known for his durability, he set an American League record by catching 100 or more games 13 years in a row. He finished his 17-year career with a .313 batting average.

Over 200 career home runs, 1200 RBIs, and a 127 OPS+ at the position while accumulating three consecutive top-five MVP voting finishes (including a runner-up to an out of his mind Jimmie Foxx in 1938). An accomplished defensive catcher as well.

Ranked 8th all-time at his position according to the JAWS metric system too. That's very good value for a position with minimal depth at this point in the draft.

Since everyone keeps selecting the minority players I'm interested in it's looking more and more like I'm going to be fielding a klansman's proverbial dream team...
