7950 arrived. All tested up. It runs 10 degrees cooler than my 6950 and it's quieter.

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/128996

3dmark11 score goes from 5103 to 7661
3dmark13 combined score goes from 1487 to 2639
Witcher2 FPS average jumped from 66 to 75, using my normal settings.
Metro2033 went from 52.67 to 68.7 FPS avg
Crysis 3 actually got worse, but as I discovered yesterday it's CPU bound even on a 2500k.

Overall about what I expected, and my game code card was included If it stays stable for a week or so I'll sell my 6950.

I think it's flawed to say the 680 offers a more stable experience based on that graph anyway. The minimum isn't very low, so there aren't huge dips. There are Spikes but I've never had a problem with spikes. If anything I think a higher maximum is a good thing when you are dealing in the area of crippling benchmark at 20FPS or less.

If we extrapolate that out to a game, the Nvidia card would be at 30 FPS constant while the AMD would be 25-40. I'm happier when I'm at 40 and the same when I'm at 25. It's not like the AMD card in that chart went far below the Nvidia card, it just dropped to it's level.

The 7970 winning the score isn't that surprising considering it wins a lot of other benches. In actual games they basically trade blows. There is always some level of benchmark jockeying between AMD and nVidia. Most of it nonsense.

Bestbuy has very good prices(last time I checked) on Asus laptops in the +/- $400 range. I'd start there. If you can try and get one with a core i3 CPU or better.

ya i agree that i'd rather have spikes of higher frames than consistently lower frames during a benchmark. after all, its looking for the higher score here and AMD is delivering that with a slightly higher average.

but, i could see the point being made if talking about the performance of a game rather than benchmark.

when you say
Quote:

...myself, i'd prefer the constant 30 fps since i always play with vsync on. (i can't stand screen tearing).

so that being the case, with the way that traditional vsync works, a constant 30 is going to be better because any time it drops below 30fps, it's going to automatically cut your frames to 20 or 15fps until it can regain 30fps again.

and with vsync enabled on my 60hz monitor, any time i can't maintain 60fps, it auto drops to 30fps ...so that 40fps you mention wouldn't exsist with your typical vsync setting ...it'd just be 30 since i'm not touching anywhere near 60fps.

so in this case, i'd rather the constant 30 rather than frames jumping around from 20 to 30fps, etc. ...and depending on how frequent the frames are dropped, it could get pretty annoying.

if you don't use vsync, and don't mind screen tearing, then the 25 to 40fps could end up being the preferred choice.

but anyway ...good to see you enjoy the new card. that game coupon really sweetens the pot. you got Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite free with it right?

sweet deal.

and yeah, i would imagine that there will be significant optimizations with regards to Crysis 3 from its current open beta state to its final release.

Did more random testing trying to find the CPU bottleneck in Crysis 3. So I'm making progress, I find that around 4GHZ my performance improves by nearly 10FPS (60 to 70). Then all the sudden they patch the game and it downloads on me. Now it runs at the same 70FPS on stock clocks or overclocked. So either they fixed a performance bug, or when the patch nuked my settings I didn't set them back properly. And I can't remember what they were, so that was a big waste of time.

Did you order from newegg or somewhere else?

Mine was not in the Box of the 7950 itself, but in the main package with the packing peanuts stapled to the packing list.

It might be a newegg.ca thing. At one point it said out of stock on the .ca website , but it was listed as instock on the .com website.

If you didn't get it try contacting them. Since neither game is out yet you have time

My card was shipped out of Chicago.
So I'm assuming it's from .com even though I ordered through .ca

Zodiac baby we might be able to strike a deal, i have no interest in Crysis 3 but i know you do

nice improvements there, btw. ...and i wouldn't put too much stock on how Crysis3 is at the moment. that should get better via final game optimizations and driver updates. the final product should be all good.

since i started playing Borderlands 2, i decided to put 1 of my old gtx460 cards in there as a dedicated physx processor.

borderlands 2 doesn't have any benchmark as far as i know, but you could tell that the game played better with the 460 in there and physx on 'high'. more stable framerate during big gun fights, etc.

mafia 2 has a benchmark, so i ran that :

gtx680 + gtx460 dedicated to physx = 75.9/ Rank B

gtx680 doing all the work on its own = 45.5/ Rank C

that's in 1080p with maxed detail settings/ high physx.

so a pretty big improvement there, by looking at that.

gonna have to try out Hawken sometime:

and Planetside 2, as well as a few others again that support physx.

tried the Batman Arkham City benchmark and didn't notice much of a difference there:

680+460 as physx (dx11 maxed settings 4xmsaa/1080p):
min = 24fps
max = 110 fps
avg = 65

680 on its own with same settings:
min = 26
max = 104
avg = 62

in the setup for Batman Arkham City is recommends a gtx570 and minimum gtx 460 for high physx ...so i'm at/beyond what they recommend there.

anyway, Borderlands 2 seems to have a pretty good improvement ...and since that's what i'm playing now, i'm pleased at the moment. that game has some of the best physx i've seen yet.

here's a vid showing some of the effects. really helps with the immersion and its pretty impressive to see all the particles flying around during some of those gun fights, etc. ...

Finally someone did this:
http://hothardware.com/Reviews/GPU-R...s-Card/?page=1

I love these kind of analysis, since it's actually a real world question. Not surprisingly it's still worthwhile to upgrade older platforms.

Crazy that you can get 49fps average @1080P High on BF3 with an overclocked Q6600 and a GTX 660. Even at stock 40 FPS is not too shabby.

Pretty hefty requirements for a Phyx GPU unfortunately. Not too many people have a 460 laying about I imagine if I tried to use my 9800gtx it would probably slow me down more than help.

Should do good, I didn't think you were interested in games; but that laptop will play games fairly well as far as $450 laptops will.

I probably would have tried to find one with 8GB, but 4 is generally enough for most people. And RAM is cheap so if you find you need more you can always upgrade.

well i went to get a different acer but it had 4gb ram, 320 hd and win 8 but i saw a dell 6gb ram, 750 hd for $50 more so i picked it up and before i opened it i kept scanning for reviews and found the almost identical computer hell the manufacturer # was only 1 digit different with terrible reviews from consumers saying it dropped wifi signal so i chickened out. this acer i saw online and not actually in the store so i liked the 500 hd as an upgrade and it was the same price as the dell so i did an even exchange. what feels good is on amazon this comp has 2 star review and they are flukey/bull ****.

if this comp plays games thats a bonus.

Just a bit. It's not as P2W as some of the louder "baddies" like to claim.

I'm actually contemplating an upgrade; I have a 5830 at the moment and it's a good 2 generations old, but I still get very smooth and acceptable frame-rates for the games I play...
