Headed for Arbitration

I found this on the Trade Rumors Board:

NHLPA Arbitration List
Sean Avery, Eric Belanger & Michael Cammalleri

I'm not surprised about Ebel, but the other two, especially Avery...

these things often get resolved before getting to the arbitration. filing is just a protection for the player.

Check out Buffalo:

from tsn:

The Buffalo Sabres announced Wednesday that 12 players off their 2005-06 roster have filed for salary arbitration.

According to the team's website, Maxim Afinogenov, Tim Connolly, Daniel Briere, JP Dumont, Brian Campbell, Henrik Tallinder, Toni Lydman, Adam Mair, Paul Gaustad, Andrew Peters, Justin Pominville and Ales Kotalik will have their pay for next season decided by a third party.

Now that's funny...

Why is Avery and Cammalleri surprising???

Avery scored 15 goals and 39 points last year. That should probably be good enough to get about $700,000.

Cammi scored 26 goals and 55 points.......Better than Langenbrunner....who just got a 5 year $14 million contract.

Well his QO would be for $585,000....I'll bet in arbitration he could get between $700,000-$750,000.

So, the others must've accepted their qualifying offers. The deadline for filing was today at 5pm. That's good news in the case of Garon. He might've won his case and gotten a big raise (after his 30-win season), as someone pointed out in another thread.

As for the ones going to arbitration, at least the Kings can walk away if/when the arbiters award Avery and Belanger with big raises.

They could walk away...but do you really think that Lombardi would let these guys go with no compensation? If they do win their cases and Lombardi doesn't like the numbers he could accept them and then deal them for draft picks.

I don't know about you guys but I'm glad it's a very short list. I'm glad Garon didn't elect for arbitration. Belanger's days now may seriously be numbered if they weren't already. Do you really think the NHL will really help Avery out? LOL

Oh, I also read somewhere that a deadline for the clubs to take players to arbritration is also approaching. Do you see DL taking Sopel and/or Miller to arbitration to reduce their salaries?

No, because Sopel and Miller have contracts for next season. KB is right that a club can, under the new CBA, take a player to arbitration to lower his value, but it applies only to RFAs.

Thanks for the reminder on it having to be a contract year...

Then I don't see the Kings taking anyone to arbitration.

The more money that they're awarded, the less the team will get in return for them. If they're awarded enough, they may not be movable. For example, if Avery manages to get $1M and Belanger $1.5M, it might be better to walk away than to risk being stuck with them when the return would be very little?

I think teams would jump at the chance of getting Avery even if he does get a raise to 1 million. Your probably right about Belanger but even if he does get a raise, I think he can easily be traded for a decent draft pick.

I think we all expect DL to be shopping Labs, Army, TK, Ebell, and Parros if he hasn't already.

When you see how much a player like Ruutu ($1.1 million), Laraque ($1.2 million) or even Scott Thornton ($1.5 million) are signing for.....I am sure that someone would trade a 3rd/4th round pick to get an Avery @ $1million or a Belanger @ $1.5 Million.....I mean Corvo got signed for $2.5 million for Heaven's sake.
