Flyers #1

Who do the Flyer faithful think will be their #1 goalie next season?

Ditto. It's pretty safe to assume no Flyer fans want Esche to be the starter.

I wouldn't say it's safe to assume that at all.

Nitty still has to prove he's better than Esche in the NHL.

I agree. Regardless of what we all think, Nitty played himself out of any consideration for the #1 job at the end of last season while Esche was not great, but very good.

Y'all are on crack. Esche will be the starter because it makes no sense. That's how Hitchcock works. I want Nitty to be the starter, since I think he has better potential, but, for some reason, hitchcock will stick with Esche, who really isn't bad, but more freakingly moody.

Ive noticed the same thing. As much as we all want and think that nitty will be the starter, there still is a chance that it will be esche, and a lot of that has to do with Hitch. It seems like he has more confidence in him cause he's been here longer. But i think it would be smarter for the Flyers to have nitty cause if they dump him, he'll most likely play better for another team and the Flyers staff will be hitting their heads against the wall...again.

It gives flexibility when they want to trade Esche or Niitty, because I think both are RFA's. They don't have to be worried about a cap hit, and they'll know which one they'll want to sign. There's no reason to give Niitty a starting goalie's contract when he isn't the starter.

Niittymaki will get the most regular season starts and it depends on Forsberg's return and their status in February if Esche makes it to the end of the season or not. Otherwise they will battle it out up to the playoffs and if the Flyers make it, Esche will likely get the nod in the playoffs if he is still a Flyer.

Maybe you're right, but I feel it was more the defense kind of falling apart in front of Nitty and that long streak from December to February where Nitty played pretty solid (which also took a pretty big ware on Frank) that enticed Hitch to give Esche the starting job come playoff time. So I feel it was more the organizations misduing in overplaying Nitty and not having a healthy D in front of him.

Hitch is a dumbass, so it won't surprise me at all if Esche is the starter. All what Rebound Rob has to do is throw a temper tantrum and Hitch will coddle him like the big baby b-itchcakes that he is.

PLEASE Niittymaki!!!

Esche is a guy who can stop the puck, Niitty is a guy who can steal games and he also had a lot more upside given that last year he backstopped some huge games at the top level professionally and internationally. Chico has played in the World Cup and right before that on a long playoff run but I get the feeling like that was his peak; Niittymaki is just getting started.

Yeah, he stole a whole lot of games towards the end of the season last year while he played himself out of any chance of being the #1 guy.

Look, I want Nitty to be the starter as much as anyone, but until he takes the job away from Esche, he is not the #1 goalie.

Hopefully Niitty.

What I didn't see discussed here was that Niitty was at his absolute best when he was given a ton of work-the Olympics and the long road trip when Esche was hurt. I say give Niitty a ton of work (ala Brodeur) and see what he does with it. If Esche (aka 'rebound rob'--love that name) don't like it, let him walk.

Hitch said that he was going to give nitty more starts once the season began so he can see whether he can be a #1 guy before actually naming him the #1 or #2.
