Ellerby is a much better skater than Teubert or Plante. He can play both sides too.
I'd say he's a solid #5/6.
The Panthers had 8 defensemen on 1-way contracts. He was the odd man out.
I don't know dnicks, odd man out or not there are a lot of teams looking for d help. Have to think if he had any potential that teams would be jumping all over him, especially with injuries.

I'm not saying he has potential to be better.
I just think he's an alright bottom pairing defenseman.

They actually have 8 defense on the roster even with Ellerby gone, although Caruso is out for a bit.

I suspect that Dallas won't sustain it. I mean how many people predicted them and Anaheim to be up there this early?
Thought people would lose their stuff if Tambo tried another Barker Reclamation Project.
Obviously you misunderstood the problem most people around here had with the Barker signing.
The Oilers had MAJOR problems on defense and needed to add at least one, but probably two, legitimate top 4 defensemen (including a #1) in order to have adequately addressed the holes on denfense that they had. Barker was Tambellini's solution to the Oilers lack of top 4 defensemen.
Right now, the Oilers can afford to take risks on players like Barker because they have their top 4 in place. Though in Barker's case, it was clear to anyone with half a brain that he wasn't an NHL defenseman even before we signed him.
