This is VERY interesting news. If done properly, this could be great news, TSN has a pretty good sports radio formula. TSN's cross-Canada footprint will be very powerful in getting good guests and interviews.
I predict it will not take long for them to make changes. Initially there will be howls of protest as it will be very different from the comfortable old shoe everyone is used to, but in the end it will be much better.
LOL. There's no new station, competition or takeover. Bell Media's sports radio properties are ALL called TSN Radio, except in 2 markets. Ottawa and Vancouver.
Ottawa stayed Team 1200 because of its ongoing success (Yes, despite the hatred on this thread it continues to hold one of the highest sports radio market shares in Canada) - and the name had heritage as one of the company's oldest sports radio stations.
This is only about Bell Media going with uniformity. The Tim Horton's model. That said, I would expect some of the TSN Toronto non prime-time programs to start picking off TSN 1200's curren Fox or ESPN syndicated shows.
As for Simpson, he's pretty good. He might have some vendettas or tangents, but at least he knows what he is talking about and can back it up. As others have mentioned, has fantastic connections and is well informed about many sports. Who else on the station can tell the tales like he does? Jason York and his years in Adirondack or Switzerland or Anaheim? Simpson's not perfect on air, but he's refreshing and when he does leave to a better gig, the station will miss him dearly.
He's average to decent. He goes off on way too many tangents...I heard him talking about poutine during a Gross Misconduct segment and turned it off. He also self-glosses way, way, way too much for a fifth-string goaltender that worked inside a couple of mediocre orgs in TO, WSH and MIN (and KHL). I keep hearing about his connections but I've yet to see him bring any coach in the league on the air at a moment's notice (I realize this takes time...just saying it would be nice) and if he has soooooooooooo many connections to the Captials, how about getting someone other than Calle Johansson on? Get Ovie, Ward, Green...or get some Toronto guys.
The thing I'll always remember about his "connections". He was adamant that Patrick Roy was the new GM of the Habs. He kept pushing this non-stop. I pick up La Presse or Le Journal de Montréal and there's Roy telling us the whole story and how he hasn't really had an interview. When picking up a newspaper as fact-checking is enough to refute what you say, you are not a reliable source or insider. You are a sloppy try-hard.
Now, as for TSN RADIO...dangle dude aside, I'll believe it's TSN when I see some of the slackers hit the road. TSN is so much more professional than Team 1200 it isn't even funny; I can tune in to Winnipeg, Toronto or Momtreal an get actual sports takes instead of Jason York talkinb aobut freaking jUJUBES for an hour instead of giving us info about teams or NHL happenings.
My wish list:
Jason York - OUT. Get someone in there with a brain and an encyclopedic knowledge of local and league sports.
Simpson - OUT. Go talk about your man-crush on Calle Johansson in some dive pub. Bring in Todd White or Murray Wilson or...ANYONE that isn't an annoying git.
AJ Jakubec - KEEP but go into Anger Management asap.
Lee Versage - IN on the morning show opposite Lloyd, opposite Marcotte is ideal.
Cut the lameassness and go back to what worked, e.g. having Garry Galley on for an hour was a-m-a-z-i-ng.
Oh, and anytime Steve Warne talks about the Leafs, give him an electroshock or club him with a truncheon. I live in Ottawa, stop talking about the Leafs unless they're in town or are in important headlines!
Marcotte is terrible... If I want to know about the senior of the week. Ill go seek it out.. Dont need him to talk about it.
I liked the NHL Power hour they used to have. The pregame roundtable is pretty solid.
Disagree with you on Simmer, although he laughs at his own jokes/comments too often he is pretty good. He has brought on Calle Johansen, Davis Poile, Joel Quenville, etc... Not a bad list of guests considering that no other host has ANY connections.
Dave Gross is pretty bad. Amateur hour comedy, I used to really like him with Gary Galley but wtf happened?
Steve Lloyd is pretty solid but kind of annoying at times.
Jason York tried to play the Mimbo former player act too much. Has pretty awful overall sports takes and brings hardly any guests to the show other than Barry Trotz and more recently, Wade Redden.
Lee Versage, I dont mind... He has been stuck with The Kulkster, Melanson, etc and has stuck around. I can see him getting better with a guy like Jakubak. Who is also pretty good. Theyve both got a solid handle on JR hockey.
I can handle JR on the morning show but Steve Warne just bothers me. They dont talk enough sports. The best 2 Segments are Simmer and Pierre.
