You do know the guy was a GM in San Jose for a quite a few years. He built that team into what they are today through great draft picks, savvy trades, and key veteran character signings.

I picked too early since it is too early to decide whether a GM has succeeded, that will probably years down the road.

"More experienced" GM's?

You know that he falls into that category, and half of the ones that are "more experienced" are absolutely atrocious.

If he keeps Garon as well, I like this move...two good goalies pushing each other. PLus I hear Cloutier isn't the kind of goalie who responds all that well to an extended workload...so maybe he and MG splitting the games will help both...if MG is retained.

I voted 7.

You think trading a 2nd + conditional pick for Cloutier is more controversial than Demitra for O'Sullivan + 1st?

I gave him a 7, and this is after my head's cooled.

These are things he has done in his short time here:
- Brought in Hextall (good ++) and Crawford (decent +)
- He traded Demitra for O'Sullivan + 1st (very creative and impressive +++)
- The players drafted are decent, but I'm going to score him down for drafting Bernier with the 11th overall... I would have preferred Sanguinetti over him, and that says a lot (-)
- Brought in competitive, gritty leaders, such as Thornton, Willsie, and McCauley (+)
- Signed defensive help, who I'm willing to give another chance at this point, with Blake (+)
- Made a plan to build a team of competitive players, with good character... and is, at that moment, sticking to this plan... clearly he wants to address what happened to the team last season (+++)... This is perhaps the most important thing.
- Got pwned in a trade for Cloutier, by paying a 2nd round pick for an injured goalie on a team in cap trouble, and Cloutier's arguably a marginal improvement over Garon (--)
- Isn't very clear in his direction for the team this year. This team does not look like a cup contender, and I don't think we're going to do poorly enough for a high pick. I'm worried we're going to have another season of mediocrity (-)

Garon is gone, if Crawford treats the goalies like Vancouver fans talk about.

I went with 5, middle of the road. It's too early to tell and it would appear that DL's far from finished this summer.

Yes. Did you hear this much disapproval and moaning after the Demitra trade.

There was, and will be some, still. And besides, controversial doesn't necessarily mean everyone complains about it. Controversial trades spark discussions, and you'll have two very separate camps who have mixed feelings about trading Demitra.

not a fair poll...

i know its uncool to admit that we are limited in our hockey knowledge, but how many of us have seen Brian Wilsie, Alyn McCauley and even Scott Thornton play more than a handful of games? not the biggest names, or the most skilled, but they were signed for a reason...we just dont know the impact they can make yet...now if we signed Chara to that massive contract, i doubt many would dislike the offseason, though overall, DL may have done better with this present group

I think the Demitra trade was gold. DL got us a helluva good prospect in Sullivan PLUS the other prospect. Way way offsets the cloutier trade.

And as i recall, Burke was doing some really crazy *** trades. A 2nd for Fedorek? Burkes team is working out ok, although i think its more the Ducks are just lucky sobs.

people liked the demitra trade because it was more even while cloutier for a 2nd rounder when doing the canucks a favor by taking him is stupid, the cloutier trade would have gone over a lot better if it was a 4th or a 5th rounder

http://www.hockeyjournal.com/nhl/200...LKolbOnFAs.htm A good read and provides some much needed perspective on Lombardi.

They rate him as snagging 1 of 5 "Big Guns" and 1 of 5 "Free Agent Gems".

This article was obviously written before the Cloutier trade. One can argue that only Boston (who massively overpaid for both Chara and Savard) and St. Louis (Weight/McKee) improved more through free agency.

Oh, and I voted an 8. I like the character signings and jolting trades.

Someone else had to have been in a bidding war with the Kings for Clout is the only conclusion I can come to for giving up a second round pick for. Im guessing the Red Wings were interested.

I would've given him an 8 or a 9, cause he brought in veteran leadership, and shored up the defensive part of the Kings game, what they desperately needed, but that Cloutier trade lowered his rating. Damnit, I hate that trade.

If they trade Garon, I know it's gonna come back to bite them in the ***. They'll be making a huge mistake.
Watch it'll be to Florida for future considerations or something.

It will be interesting to see what Lombardi gets for Garon.....it better be more than he gave up for Cloutier....or I am putting him in the same group as Murray and Taylor.

With Buffalo looking to move a goalie as well, I doubt we get much return for Garon. Better to let Labs go down on the waiver wire than give away Garon.
