Ericsson's play for that Hemsky stick on Oilers 5-on-3 PP was a game breaker. That was perfect penalty killing. Exact opposite that abysmal Kronwall is doing on PK (screening Howard).

Listened to the game off the NHL site and just wanted to commend your announcers, Ken Kal and Paul Woods. They seem to enjoy their work and each other.

Edmonton has some great talent. Really like Eberle. RNH seems to be doing a good job on the defensive end which helps with the lack of scoring this year to date. Can you imagine if they get one more top level draft pick and get Jones? Jones and Justin Schultz would be a an insane top pairing along with all the talent they have at forward.

When do they start winning?

It worked in Pittsburgh and Chicago. I'm not sure they have a Crosby or a Toews on that team, but the defense could improve rapidly with Schultz and Jones.

I don't get it either. He always gives a solid performance. Good on the pk. Good forecheck, hits, grinds, gets shots. He rarely makes mistakes.

He's not an amazing player but he's a very solid bottom six guy. One that I think is worth keeping.

Ken Kal is probably my favorite sports announcer period. I have to listen to the games more than I get to watch them, but I don't mind usually because he is just so good at what he does.

Ericsson is making me a believer.

Schultz (age 22) is playing at a level Smith (age 24) should be at now were he not held back. Smith doesn't have that wrist shot but has better wheels. We'll see.

Kronwall

Khabibulin kept the score close and made a few big saves. And I couldn't decide between Kronwall and Ericsson. Both had good games, but Kronwall scored the game winner, which puts him over Ericsson slightly.

The Ericsson brain farts have been gone for a while now. He's improved drastically since 2 seasons ago. Last year he was our best D man in the playoffs IMO.

Kronwall is so frustrating. He makes a lot of good plays on offense but then in the same sequence will just lose the puck inexplicably or shoot a slap shot directly at the defender.

Howard

I thought this was a big game for Howard. He needed to bounce back and he had a strong game today. Going back to back tomorrow makes me question the line about him tired. That or Mrazek getting tangled up with Backes in the 3rd resulted in some minor injury.

Meh, not a big fan of either of them. They're not bad, but they're not good, either.

Ericsson is not a great passer
He makes a great "up-the-ice" transition pass. But he's not the kind of guy who can wheel the puck around the offensive zone.

They're both good roleplayers. You wouldn't build your bottom 6 around them, but they're great for filling it out. They're not the usual fodder you use to fill up a 4th line, they work hard and can contribute.

I thought E played a great game, and has looked great so far this season. But I don't think he should be on a PP unit.

On the other hand that's very important for his role and something the Wings need. A solid first pass can not only kill another team's offensive possession time but also lead to more dangerous offensive rushes for your own team. Defensive stability and a good first pass? Ericsson has moved out of the doghouse and set it on fire.

As far as the offensive zone goes, I'm fine with him being the guy that just sends the puck over to his partner (particularly if that partner is anyone with good offensive zone play, which is most of the other d-men on the Wings) or chip the puck up the boards. Wouldn't mind seeing him shoot more though, he's got the slapper you'd expect out of a 6'4 dude and a better-than-average wrister for a defensive d-man (converted forward and all). He's been using his shot more this year, which seems to be working well.

As long as he keeps it simple and moves the puck to the nearest man or puts it on net I'm okay with it. Ericsson can be a solid contributor if he sticks to the basics and puts his physical tools to work.

I'm glad Ericsson is proving me wrong.

However, I don't see Quincey doing the same. Ugh.

True but as the defensive dman they want him to be that's exactly what he should be good at. He's made some great passes up the middle trying to spring guys on breakaways. Just think some people couldn't bench or trade him for a 5th rounder quick enough a couple years ago.

Ericsson used to be my whipping boy, but having Kyle Quincey on the team makes you appreciate him.

Oilers are so young, their time will come but it's not anytime soon, that's for sure. They've a long way to go before they consistently begin to win games like last afternoon's game.
