I'm pretty new to hockey but I noticed that some concussion / injuries come from the players being checked from behind and go into the boards head first. Would it be a good idea to replace the boards with some kind of softer / foam-padded material?
I don't get it. You will still get huge open ice-hits with the added advantage that now it will be MUCH safer to do those big hits along the board as well.
You will also eliminate guys who purposely look into the board to avoid checks because the opposing player won't check from behind.
