He's too valuable a prospect to get wasted over a career minor league goon. These guys usually search out each other but on any given night if no comparable player is available very often they'll look for the next best thing. Dylan is going to get stronger and smarter as a fighter himself (barring getting seriously hurt) given time. Right now he's not on that kind of level. The other night when we were playing Wilkes Barre--there's Steve McIntyre in the lineup. It's something to think about.
I can't agree witht that. Can't fight in fear. Most fighters don't anyway. Up and coming guys want to get in there and see where they stand againt the big boys. This is what they were waiting for. It's thier chance. Gotta go after it.

That's all well and good, except for the fact that McIlrath can actually play hockey. Would you want Lucic fighting those guys if he were in the AHL as a 20 year old? No, of course not.

Mac did a great job against one of these developed goons in Tim Spencer. It's a tough balance, Mac should not be fighting the MacIntyre's of the world just yet but he can probably do ok despite his age.

Niemi is back with the Whale (yay). The Whale have also added center Michael Pelech, who was playing with Cincinnati in the ECHL.

Quote:
Pelech, a 6-3, 210-pound fourth-year pro, comes to the Whale from the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones. The 23-year-old Toronto native is second on the Cyclones team in points with 37, tied for the team lead in assists with 27 and third in penalty minutes with 63. Pelech has also played three AHL games this year with the Worcester Sharks, a stint in which he had one assist and two PIM.

Pelech, who was a sixth-round pick (156th overall) by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2009 NHL Draft out of the Ontario Hockey League, has appeared in nine career AHL games with the Sharks, Norfolk Admirals and Manchester Monarchs, notching one assist and eight penalty minutes. In 249 total ECHL contests with the Cyclones, Toledo Walleye and Ontario Reign, he sports career numbers of 46-119-165 with 432 PIM.

I'm sorry but McIlrath fighting McIntyre is not in the best interest of either McIlrath, the Whale or the Rangers. McIntyre was never anything but a goon in the NHL/AHL--I'm not even sure if he could make an ECHL team on skills other than fighting and there are a number of players like him around. The career stats of guys like Mirasty or Yablonski or Sugden suggest they would never amount to anything apart from what they do best. McIlrath has something none of them have ever had--a future as a real player. Milan Lucic avoids at least as much as possible fights with guys like Colton Orr or John Scott and why in the world would he fight them without a really, really good reason? It doesn't help his team to be sitting in the box with a guy with 1/10th of his talent and in the same way there's no reason for Dylan to be doing the same--no point risking injury against a complete cement head.

Now that Michael Pelech plays for the Whale, he can get a free haircut every time he scores on the SuperCuts Powerplay LOOOOOL

He will do the same thing Beuk did: he could fight, but used this skill rarely, only when necessary. Still, he was enough of a fist threat to keep the opposition honest. You did not want to cheap shot Leetch knowing Beuk on the ice.

Just a little XL Center management update for you guys. Global Spectrum was selected today to run XL Center.

Quote:
Global Spectrum of Philadelphia, chosen Thursday to guide the Hartford's XL Center in downtown Hartford and Rentschler Field in East Hartford through the next decade, said an agreement keeping the AHL's Connecticut Whale hockey team in Hartford could come within days.

"We hope to have it locked up next week," Frank E. Russo, Jr., Global Spectrum's business development chief said, in a telephone interview. "You only have so much standing when you're bidding. Now we have much more."

According to Bob Crawford, Benn Ferreiro is dinged up (not playing) and Shayne Wiebe is done for the season (tore his ACL in a morning skate)... eek.

Edit: No Brandon Siegel either, he's got the shiits (stomach bug)

So with the Whale sucking before the season, with Kreider, Miller, and Gilroy up here are they the worst AHL team of all time now?

With a record of 20-21-6, I would say no.

Wow, did they improve? I thought their record was much worse than that.

Seems like they win a few and lose a few. I think they've slowly improved up to around .500. The record was worse a while ago.

Nice to see Thomas (and Haley) with two points. Another great game by Talbot so far. Really keeping the team in the game again.

Edit: Thomas scored an empty netter and finished with three points. Talbot with 37 saves on 38 shots.

Three points for Thomas now! Looks like that line clicked. Looks like it was an EN goal. Whatever.

When does the Rangers/Whale lease end in Hartford? It's coming up, isn't it?

It ends after this season. But the newly-chosen management is hoping to get a deal done with the Rangers this week. Posted this a few days ago:
