As expected, Johnston named assistant coach and Ranford the goaltending coach.

"I just thought it's something we've been looking at since I got here, quite frankly, because I do think it's important that you have an established goalie in the mix," Lombardi said. "I think it's difficult, particularly this year, to go into training camp with an issue as to who's No. 1 and who's No. 2.
I guess this means it's Cloutier's job to play himself out of.

He made an effort to sign Detroit Red Wings forward Brendan Shanahan, an unrestricted free agent, but the $5-million price tag was too much, a league source said.
At least he tried.

2001-02 Vancouver 62 31-22-5 2.43
2002-03 Vancouver 57 33-16-7 2.42
2003-04 Vancouver 60 33-21-6 2.27

I think those numbers have earned him the #1 spot... at least to start out the season.

So, what I read into this is that LaBarbera may be best suited for the backup job, as the Kings can likely get more in a trade for Garon (something) than LaBarbera (nothing.)

Cause LaBarbera ain't worth **** anyways. Say goodbye to Garon people. This will be DL's big bonehead move of the off-season. Liked his UFA signings, but I'm definately not on board for what has transpired in the last 12 hours.

Not really. I was one of the few who was annoyed with AM refusing to declare Garon the #1 out of training camp last year.

ya but shouldn't they atleast go through training camp before deciding who the #1 goalie is? cloutier could have gotten worse because of his injury

Well, let me rephrase. I'm bothered a little bit, since I don't think that Cloutier is that much better than Garon, but I'm not bothered too much, since there's something to be said for declaring a starter. It doesn't mean that things can't change if Garon outplays Cloutier.

Being a Canucks fan I can almost certainly, unless Crawford learnt from his mistake, tell you that Cloutier no matter what won't play himself out of the job.

Crawford is notorious for playing his backup once every two-three weeks, and when he comes in and is cold and doesn't play well, he never sees the light at the end of the tunnel, and Cloutier is being rode more than a pony beloning to a family with 10 girls.

In all seriousness, Cloutier is a great goalie, when given a proper workload, I just hope Crawford likes Garon enough to play him on a somewhat regular basis too, it'd work best for both goalies and the organization, and heck even Crawford.

Also from that article

Quote:
"No disrespect, but I think it's an upgrade (Cloutier) for the group that we have here," Crawford said. "I think Dan is among the best competitors that I've ever coached."
Quote:
Lombardi said he expected to trade one of them (Garon/Labarbera) and hopes Cloutier fills the position until the organization can develop goaltending prospects.
Who is gonna take Garon or Labarbera? There's no market for goalies right now. Legace is still available.

I think Cloutier/Garon would probably be a decent tandem, but since Labs has basically no trade value, I expect it will be Garon that gets traded.

Big time. We're gonna re-sign Cloutier until Bernier can make the jump, and deal away Garon? Ugh, sick. There's no market for goaltenders now. I don't get it.

I really hope we keep Garon and deal Labarbera.

If we go with Garon and Cloutier, we have two goaltenders capable of winning 30+ games. Not a lot of other teams can boast that.

Because not alot of other teams are stupid enough to have 2 goalies making $1.5 million+. There is a thing called the salary cap that sort of discourages that.
