You're not even going to elaborate on that? That's a pretty bold statement.

My point earlier in this tread was that maybe El's was the only one that a team showed interest in and that's why he was dealt. I'm not saying every D but out of the ones mentioned in this thread.

Santos in the Miami Herald said

Assistant general manager Mike Santos said Friday that Ellerby was a casualty of a numbers crunch. The Panthers will have seven defensemen back once Ed Jovanovski returns from a knee injury, and Ellerby had found playing time in Florida scarce over the past few seasons.

“We’re getting healthier and had to make some sort of roster move and expose a player to waivers,” Santos said. “At some point we will have too many bodies. This was a player another team had interest in, so we felt we had to make a move.”

Lol I can't elaborate because there is no bases. It's a mix of gut feeling and pissed off we didn't use the pick on another player.

At least you admit there's no reasoning behind it

Who would be the other player? Matheson looks quite good.

Yeah, to me it seems like Matheson was an 'off the radar' pick but it seems like he should turn out to be a good pick. I've read some good impressions from some BC fans.

I personally wanted Gaunce. Or Henrik Samualson.

Kings fan popping in. If any Ellerby fans left want to see the kid play.

Practice lines for Kings today.

Ellerby - Doughty

Scuderi - Voynov

Martinez - Drewiske

Muzzin

If Ellerby wanted a shot, it's staring him right in the face.

These practice lines will most likely be the lineup Sunday. Sutter doesn't make many changes.

i was upset that we didnt pick finn instead, but matheson looks pretty good, wasnt he the leading ice time getter on D for boston college earlier this year? i think he'll develop well, a guy with his skating and puck moving ability with a guy like petrovic would make a nice line in the future, kinda like campbell-gudbranson.

Matheson as a freshman leads all BC defensemen in goals at 5, points at 15, 2nd in assist at 10 (1st being 12), and 2nd in shots at 49 (1st being 52).

It may even be Matheson-Gudbranson someday.

I'm pleased with Matheson as I'm proud of his play in college, especially as a freshman.

He's exceeded expectations throughout his first college season so it's hard to be dissapointed with the selection

I'm a little late here, but you guys realize that this was a move that basically happened because Ellerby wasn't getting playing time, he wasn't needed essentially. He will be a RFA at season's end and would've probably wanted more money then Tallon would've been willing to give him so he decided to just get rid of him now and get a 5th for him.

I liked Ellerby when we drafted him but he wasn't drafted by Tallon and isn't his type of guy. A 5th is a low pick I agree, I wanted a higher pick for him too but he is a RFA at season's end and those types of players don't return high picks so it is what it is, lets move on with the guys we have and the guys that are coming up.

Like How we get rid of one of our best skating defensemen when weregularly ice Jovo, Kuba and Weaver. Do not like this trade. Numbers game or not.

Ditto. Sounds like he's getting the ice time to prove he belongs.

I'm going to miss Ellerby. I really hope he's able to put it together given this new opportunity because he's got a great attitude. Really looking forward to the game this afternoon.

So, when do we package the fifth and a good, young player (or two, we should probably get rid of two because, after all, we have the depth, amirite?) for a declining exciting player in his mid-30s with "experience" that can help us (albeit futilely) compete for the bottom seed before retiring from his tenth-place Panthers?

I liked the 1st part of your post. Ellerby looks good so far.

We will keep the 5th, it's not going to add any value at all to any trade where a good player is coming back.

Name change or do we lose her to the LA KINGS in the trade too??

This is a bit of a SHCKER trade, hockey is a business and a 5th round is better than nothing. Theres been tons of gems found after the 4th round. As most have stated, nobody is willing to take on Kuba's contract.

I liked the grit Ellerby brought this year with a couple fights but maybe he was unhappy with the amount of minutes he was playing?? You never know whats going on behind the scenes. We need Kuba, Weaver and Jovo for veteran leadership, they may not impress everyone all the time but theyre mentors when it comes down to it.

This moves gives Robak or Petrovic an opportunity and I remember hearing Dineen say he was impressed with Petro. Robak has alredy seen NHL game action so why not let these two get a "chance" which Ellerby had numerous times.

Wish him well in LA, I'm surprised with the trade but not upset about it, I feel Tallon could have haggled for a 4th but maybe we see a deal with LA at the deadline in April?? You scratch my back and ill stratch yours kinda deal......

I also noticed Rob Scuderi is a UFA this year. Kuba for Scuderi.
u pretty much lost me in tht trade too. however i pop in with my 2sense on the panthers boards occasionally.
