Another 1year deal for Ribs. Gainey was wise to not throw a bag of gold at him after 03-04.

He probably just signed his RFA offer sheet. He can still be trade bait.

Yeah, he don't deserve a long term contract...good move by Gainey!

It says that they are signed for the season 2006-07 so I guessed that it's only one year.

Not necessarily. It's easier to trade someone under contract than an RFA.

Three things keep Ribeiro from being traded.
1) The Habs don't have anyone to replace him with.
2) All the UFAs who might have replaced him are no longer on the market.
3) I haven't heard rumors about another team that might want him.

Ribeiro isnt really good trade bait anyway. He's not desirable. As predicted he is signed to a one-year deal, probably for somewhere around $1 million. Low risk, short-term investment in case we sign his replacement sooner rather than later.

I think having him signed isn't bad, like someone said earlier he probably just signed his qualifying offer, what this does is allow Gainey to explore for a C in a trade and if he can't find anyone we can always fall back to RIbs but hopefully he''ll be going the other way. There are always teams willing to take a guy like that if the asking price isn't high.

well if you guys remember, trading your RFA's after you signed them is apparently ill business.

so it might save his *** for one more season.

maybe he'll have put on 25 pounds and be a total monster next season. that'd be a shocker.

I find parallels in the Ryder and Ribero situations, they both still have alot to prove and for our sake lets hope they can lift there games.

NOPE, trading UFAs after you sign them is bad business. RFAs are traded after signing all the time. See Hossa for Heatley.

And one of the most classless punters in the game returns. Joy and bliss. The folks at RDS must be whooping it up since The Franchise is back.

Disappointing move by Gainey, though it's also an understandable hockey move. I would have hoped the GM would see not signing him as addition by subtraction, however he obviously feels that King Ribby can serve a useful purpose on the ice that cannot be otherwise filled at this point in time.

This unfortunately slows Gainey's quiet purge of all the classless elements in Montreal. A downer for fans who are sick of the three-ring circus.

Agree.

It can't hurt the team. If he does'nt have a place on the team after the camp he can be traded for a low pick or buy-out.

3 is the most important. How many teams want mike Ribeiro?

I was thinking earlier that perhaps Ribeiro was signed as a result of Ryder's arbitration case coming up. By signing Ribeiro to hopefully about the amount he made last season Ryder should have less of a leverage in terms of salary demands since I think the Arbitration will compare him to the rest of the team he plays for more than the rest of the league (although that will also weight in on the result)

IMO Ryder is worth more than Ribeiro but I don't think he is worth much more

If you wanted to lock him up a little longer..mayber you're the one who should be locked up!!

Seriously, do you really think the Habs are going anyware with Mike Ribero as a second line center. IF you think YES, then please proceed to the psychatric ward before going to lock up!

My two bigges hopes this off-season was to get a legit #2 centerman and upgrade our D.

Arnott to a two year deal and Danny Markov to a three year deal, both for fair market value. After seeing these other idiot GM's throow money, i give credit to Gainey for staying disciplined.

However, we haven't solved our problems yet and signing Ribero is a step backwards imo.

On a team that has trouble scoring goals I think Ryder is a lot more valuable than Ribeiro.

Gainey needed to get rid of Ribeiro. Now we're stuck with this punk for an other season.
